Fossilized bison bone?

I found a local source for some mammoth ivory and they also have some fossilized bison leg bones that have some beautiful color. The bones are whole so I can't tell what kind of texture they are underneath the surface. Anybody have any experience with something like this? Thanks.

In my experiance with Mammoth bone and prehistoric Bison bone, they are going to have similar texture. Be sure to get a shin bone, they have a lot less marrow cavity and the bone is denser.

I have used quite a bit of local Buffalo bone dug out of a local pishkin here, something a little magical about digging up an animal that was killed around 1000 years ago by Indians. Have a couple nice skulls and many projectile points from there, and the bone makes very cool knife handles.

Richard, if you buy some of this bison bone I would love to buy a piece from you. Same from you Rob, if you have any extra. I'm looking to collect a little bit of each of these types of materials-mammoth, bison, walrus, mastadon, etc. Small pieces of bark would be great.

I sure dont have any fossil Bison or Mammoth left, but I can sure send you shin bone from an American Bison I dug up, killed by man about 1000 years ago. It would most likely make a medium handle. It has a brown layer but it is very thin, under that it is white.

Rob,I would love to trade you out of or Buy a American Bison Shin Bone.Just email me if you have any available.

Hey Rob, This is a slightly diffferent topic but, were you ever able to do anything with that red carbon that Les sent you? I sent you an email about it awhile back but you must not have gotten it.....Anyhow, the nylon content really made a mess and I couldn't figure out how to tame those little threads short of melting them with a quick pass of a cigarette lighter. I'd be interested in hearing your take on it.

beknives, Ill look today and see what I have.

Peter, work the red carbon slow and when you get it contoured clean it up by hand. Then coat with super glue and let completely dry and sand smooth with fine grit pater. Keep doing that till you build it up where there is a thin layer of super glue and polish it out. Looks really good then. Not sure it is worth the trouble but I had red and blue carbon fiber knives at Blade and they were gone quick!

I have bought tons of bison priscus bones from here in Alaska and found very little of it thick enough for scales.Out of 1000 pounds of mammoth bone 70 pounds would be usable for handles.I sold all of my mammoth bone from this year to IvoryDan (360-795-0228)When he came up for what I hope will be our yearly moose hunt.I buy the bone from the eskimos who collect ivory for me.I hope to go on one more trip this year .We got our first real snow here in Fairbanks yesterday and it will probably stay untill April.
