My wife and the 5 youngest children spent some time up in Sacramento this last week. My wife is familiar with the areas surrounding Sacramento. We visited a town called Jackson, which is one of the gold mining towns, and it is littered with antique stores, and small shops in old buildings. I enjoy places like these. I am always on a hunt for an antique store knife. There were a couple that I considered but the prices were too high, no bargains.

I saw this coin shop that had a whole tray of silver dollars in the store front window. I wanted to get one for my older brother. Back in the day, probably about early 70's, he beat the snot out of me a little too hard. I maybe deserved half of the beating he gave me. I was gonna tell dad about this one. So, he gave me one of Grandpa's silver dollars to shut me up. We both had some, but now I had one of his. We dared not spend them, although the urge was somewhat overwhelming. Well, my brother still claims that he gave me ALL of his silver dollars, but I never asked for any, and I only recall getting one of his. His 47th birthday was in September, and I gave him an old silver dollar that I bought in a pawn shop. It brought tears to his eyes, I guess it was a redemption issue.

So, back to the shop. It had some hokey jewelry and such, and some buffalo nickels for a dollar, and some indian head pennies and such, but when I went inside, I hear from the kids, "They have knives dad!" I like to discover them myself, but I guess it is good to have scouts always vigilant for dad. I really entered to purchase a silver dollar for $24 (great deal huh?) :-) Then I saw a tray of 1970's dot bone Case slipjoints. There was a muskrat, a large stockman, a small stockman and a small Texas Jack (I already have 2 of that pattern), but I settled in on this one..... I now have 2 of this pattern as well. A 6208 Whittler. 2 blades, factory edge, and only a small fleck on the CV clip blade. Of course, there were some familiar blade rub marks. I guess that proves authenticity.;) The fit and finish is not perfect, but 70's seem to be consistent. I love the smooth swedges and the dyed bone always make me stare. What really turns my crankshaft is that the dye does not penetrate deep leaving some whitish color next to the darker hues. Hope you enjoy the pics. Oh yeah, the last pic has my brother's silver dollar for this Christmas. I picked out a 1900, just because it seemed to be a cool date. I am not supposed to get him anything for Christmas, but I still do, just to piss him off. I can put up plenty a good fight now, but I think he still could take me.

The other knife in the pic was my edc choice for the Sacramento trip. It is a bulldog 1996 swell center moose? It is what I call it. It cut lots of fishing line for all the rigging I did for the 5 kids on the American River, and then near Lake Folsom. We caught no fish, but only had 3.5 hrs of fishing anyways. If I had my way, I would have fished much much more, but it was too cold for the wife and kids. I gotta toughen them up a little. It only hailed for 15 min. or so.

Hey Chris...that knife seems to be in very good condition?
What is the actual knife itself like ( ,apart from that lovely jigged bone )
From the photo's the blades look fairly full ...nice find, did you check out the muskrat?
Thanks for the story with the dollar and your brother, I lost my brother some time ago, and it warms my heart when I read stuff like this...so thank you Sir!!

Thats a fine lookin Whittler Chris. It certainly has some nice lookin bone

Nice find you lucky dog.
Even with all your whinin', I'm betting you had a great time with the family AND found a great knife.
Cool $24 dollar too.

Nice find Chris. I like the older Cases. The walk and talk is smooth as glass. We used to have tons of antique stores around here, but they all dried up. There's a few around, but they get an Imperial in and think its worth a fortune.

Cool. Very nice knife. I think I'd have left that shop with the large stockman too.

Good story. thanks for sharing.

The blade looks unused, as did most of the knives there. IIRC one of the stockman knives was 70's stainless.

I paid $40 for the whittler. They are great slicers. It snaps like it was new, open and closed. There is a hairline of light between the liners and spring but the springs sit flush open or closed. The bolsters have some wear, as if they were sliding around in a drawer when it opened and closed. I may put just a little bit of flitz on that to get the surface scratches out.

Thanks a lot CJ, Jackson is one of my "secret" hunting grounds for old knives, between Placerville and Sonora it's literally a gold mine of old knives! Maybe we'll run into each other there, I'll be the guy with the stag knife (GEC, Northfield, Queen, etc) in his left front pocket and Benchmade clipped to his right front.

Only $40 for the whittler? Too bad the rest of them probably won't be there the next time I'm in Jackson (I pass through on the way to our annual family camping trip on the Mokelumne River below Salt Springs Reservoir). Which store was it?

I sent you an email Lambertiana. IIRC we should not list shops specifically.

Hi Chris -

Great find!

There are a couple of places around here I need to snoop for knives.

I have gone to a few "estate sales" recently but have been striking out on knives at the sales.

Thanks for the pictures!

best regards -
