Hello all
A friend found this in about 3 feet of dirt. I’m not asking a valuation on this but does this appear to be “old” ?
No blade markings that I can see considering the rust. The metal bands are brass.
Trying to find resource what this could be-Thanks!

It might help if you post a pic or link to a pic. LoL

There could be a number of reasons why
it was buried in 3 feet of dirt.
Just like it could have been discarded on purpose.
If it has no markings, chances are it would
not be an easy identification process
about its origins or manufacturer.
Though one could at a glance
make out a distinct blade pattern
or shape to narrow down a wild search.
Meanwhile as you're sorting
out some pictures to post,
do explain bass "bands" in your context ??!
I know some folks would rush of
to bury their heads in dirt rather
than so see a rusting metal brass band ...

Or it could be a murder weapon?

and now it's got the ops fingerprints on it.:D

So, it's cursed? Bad juju?

voodoo? serpent and rainbow style....;)

3ft is pretty deep down. expect someone buried it on purpose maybe as David said. maybe someone dropped it while digging didnt notice and filled the hole? maybe some kid years ago forgot where and never found it.....? something like that? who knows.....

Hey, B Bey Holbrook , welcome to the forum! :)

I discussed this a bit with my sister who has been involved in a lot of archaeological digs to try to get some perspective on how far back 3 feet might be archaeologically. At a dig in a fur trading post turned military fort in South Dakota active from the 1830's to 1850's, she said that they were down 2-4 feet to get to the artifact layer from that period.

Keep in mind that this can vary wildly due to the influences of natural and man-made factors in a specific place, but 3 feet isn't necessarily too far down for historic deposits of steel implements. In an archaeological excavation they actually generally learn more by looking at the dirt around an object than the object itself. It will look very different if a hole was dug and the object was buried than if it was dropped on top of the ground and eventually covered naturally.

Looking forward to seeing pics when you can get them posted!
