Found a 455

I was digging through some boxes in the garage looking for an old Zippo. I came across this little Buck 455. I don't remember ever owning a Buck knife, and don't believe I've ever seen this knife before, but there it is sitting in a box of my memories from my time in the Army. It is stamped Buck 455 n. From what I could look up, the n is a half circle that means it was made in 1997. This sounds about right as that's the year I enlisted and it's right in the wheelhouse of everything else that was in that particular box. I brought it inside and spent 5 minutes sharpening it and it's shaving hair. I put a little oil in the joint and she's good to go. I looked up Buck 455s online and every picture I can find shows a serrated blade. Mine isn't serrated. I'm also missing the thumb stud.

Does anybody know why my blade isn't serrated, though all the others appear to be? Is there a source for thumb studs that I could order a replacement from? Does anybody have any information about who might have snuck into my garage and left this knife in my box?

Any help would be appreciated. I never did find that old Zippo.

Your knife is called the Mini-Protégé, smaller brother to the model 450 Protégé. It was new in the 1998 catalog. The catalog shows both serrated and unserrated versions. You could check with Buck to see if the thumb stud could be warranted but the cost of mailing a cheap knife to them is the downside. Google "knife thumb studs" and you will find many sources of knife making supplies.

Thanks for the tip. I emailed Buck to see if I could just buy a thumb stud off of them since the hole seems smaller than most of the universal thumb studs I was seeing. They're going to just go ahead and ship one to me at no charge. Pretty dang sweet.

Seems like Buck customer service always tries to please.
Glad it worked out.

I've got a 450 about that same age, carried on weekends (it is too "evil looking" for work, where I carry a smaller knife). All the black rubber wore off. Mine is serrated but never had a thumb stud.It actually looks pretty cool without the black rubber.
