Back out in the swamp today cruising. Spotted a few more gators, but was too slow with the camera. Did notice this clump of cypress trees and noticed a Magnolia growing among them. I made me way around and found it to be a high and dry island. I also found I was not the first to think it would make a dandy camp spot.
I got right up to it on the pontoon boat.
Plenty of high and dry land. No gator slides anywhere.
Found a grill grate for fire cooking, and an old tarp that looked like it had been a makeshift tent at some time.
Nice view from the island.
Marked it with the GPS and exported the trip into Google Earth to get a satellite image of the area. Pretty remote. Marked the island as "Camp."
Probably head out there next week for an overnighter. Plenty of stuff to construct a shelter. Even some dry wood around, although I'll bring some split hardwood for cooking.
Back at the camp I used the little carbon steel/antler knife I recently made, this one: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=728164
to cut up a chicken to throw on the grill for supper. Sat outside by the fire and listened to the whippoorwills and coyotes while I ate. Not a bad afternoon.
