FOund a cool site.....

Good old Cliff Stamp. He got banned here didn't he?

Regards,

Jos

IIRC one of the discussions got a little heated (more than usual) and he insulted some moderators. Quick way to get the boot.

Cliff Stamp not only insulted Mods., but he insulted MANY knife makers as well. We do no NEED his ilk around here.

The subject of this web site comes up every now and again.

It is just as well that Cliff has his own site. He has some good information, although I take some of his theories with a grain of salt. However, I found him to be an ill-mannered guest in this community. He insulted many people, always keeping his insults phrased so that it was not a bannable offence. One day he forgot himself and insulted Spark, and that was that. On his own web site he can insult whomever he wishes because it is his house and he can make the rules there. But I do not take all of his information at face value, nor do I recommend the site to the uninitiated.

Well said. And I agree.

I'd like to point out that just because someone is a jerk, doesn't necessarily make them wrong. As has been said, some of his ideas I'm still not so sure about, but I have to give some credit to the guy for seriously working with a lot of knives, in great detail, over a long period of time. I think it would be a mistake to dismiss the information on his site out of hand, just because of his personality.

Well there's been more than enough Cliff-deconstructing in the past. I found that he had some interesting insights but was very dogmatic, and if anyone (including well-known knifemakers) said "that's my experience" he couldn't explore that with them - it always became a bitter contest. Cliff's church of knives is very . . . fundamentalist.

I know nothing about his behaviour here or elsewhere, but he has put together a comprehensive and thought-provoking survey of steels. He appears to have put a lot of work into the testing process and has in-depth metallurgical knowledge. He also knows how to write very well! Well worth spending some time reading but with an open mind.

I cannot imagine caring that much about steel....holy cow. At the end of the day, my cheap knives will cut, just like the more expensive ones.

I don't mean to insult anyone for getting into this stuff, but I think this has transcended the practical need for a suitable blade material.

Steels don't cut, blade geometries do (My god did I just quote Cliff):barf:

As much as I hate to admit it he was right with that quote. People normaly choose the steel based on its properties: Wear resistance, Strength, Toughness, Stain resistance, Edge holding. The steel should have characteristics that match or excel at the intended job.

Cliff introduced me to Alvin Johnston.

I've been nothing but a jerk ever since.

Okay, I was a jerk before, but my appreciation and direction of using and choosing knives has changed.

cliff believed in a very specific way of interpreting and describing things, and was willing to discuss (or plainly state) point by point any outside statement that conflicted with any individual part of his interpretation.

as a result, he came off as argumentative (for the sake of argument), and insulting because he would under no circumstances give on any point without a long discussion, regardless of the other persons experience, profession, or verbal demeanor.

most of the time in his threads, and thread discussing him, I'd write a few paragraphs, look at them and the delete it and move on because it wouldn't do any good for either sides.

A pity.
But if Cliff is the chief "I'ya-told-yah" of knifedom.
it is most unfortunate that he's Totaliban.

Yeah, it's sad to come back here and find Cliff banned. Hard to believe. No matter what his personality was, it's very hard to fine someone spending that much time and efforts evaluating all those knives.

I've said similar before, but I have to say it again----I can guarantee you there was once a caveman saying things like this when his buddy kept looking for different rocks that would break off into sharper edges.

"...Krump nok down tree wid last rok! Why u keep lukin??? It gud enuff!!!"

I appreciated his evaluations. I did not appreciate his decision that there was more truth in his theories than in the knowledge of the steel manufacturers and metallurgists. When he tried to tell Sandvik that they were not recommending the correct heat treat for their steel, he lost me.
