found 2 nice birch burls while hunting. The larger one of the 2 I actualy found last year but never got around to grabbing it. both were on standing dead trees so are already a stepo or two ahead in the drying already. the larger one looks like it will have some spalting. it will be needing some stabilization for sure. here's some pix

I cant wait to get a look inside these after a few months to fully dry out.

That'd be more like a couple of years!!
THe "rule of thumb is: rough sawn wood in a fairly dry place w/ even temperature to air dry will take approximately one year per inch of thickness. You have a rather large, dense burl.... it'll be a while!

no these were cut from standing dead trees. the rest of the trees were cut, split and burned for firewood whlie we were out hunting. split and burned very nicely so couldnt have been too green. I'll wait probaly untill spring then I'll slab them up and let them dry out the rest of the way before sending off for stabilizaton

I they where mine I would let the big one sit outside in the bushes or under a tree with a bunch of yogurt on it then rap it with news paper to finish spalting it wil take some time but the burl as it sits is pretty plan so you have nothing to lose put time.

One thing to be careful if leaving outdoors over the winter.
If you are in a rainy area, birch can go from solid to mush over a period of months.
Don't ask me how I know.

I haven't done the yogurt thing for spalting but I have been told it works good to feed the spalting fungus.
Good luck whatever you decide to do.
When it is dry, Birch takes stabilizing very nicely.

I will be storing these with the HUGE one I found last year, in my unheated garage, I also know how fast birch will rot on you so I am carefull to keep them dry.

Nice local score!! I haven't been out much to find anything lately but those look great. Best I have is some birch trunk that fell on our SUV in our yard.

So, when you find something like that, how is the best way to cut it to get the greatest amount of figure?
