I recently got into slip joints after I purchased a Winchester Toothpick. What a great knife. Good steel and very strong springs! All I was able to look at is the new Cases at Gander mt. I did not like the stainless steel blades and the springs are all soft.
I picked up a couple more today that I like.

The small one has on it: CASE XX 62087 no dots
It needs to be cleaned up a bit but it is in great condition. The blades have never been sharpened. The small blade is shiny but the large blade is a dull. I wonder if they are both carbon steel. I hope so.

I was wondering if both knives are real bone?

The big one has on it: CASE XX 6217 and 9 dots. It needs to be cleaned up a bit, but is in good shape. Does anyone know if these are carbon blades?

Thanks for your input!

Both Case knives appear to be vintage from your description and your photo's which would make them carbon steel. And in addition, the top knife is 1940-64 from based on the nice clear photo and may even be Rogers Bone!

The Bottom larger knife is the Loom Fixer Pattern and may also be Rogers Bone, but may also be Red Bone and is 1971 Vintage based on your description.

Thanks sonnyd, I appreciate the input! What is the signifigance of Rogers Bone? I've never heard of that.

Is there any way to pinpoint the year on the small one?

Kodiak, Case XX with no USA means pre-1965. Some old timers can tell by the stamp/letters, and the bone jigging and colors whether its real early, but you gotta find those rare individuals! I have a number of XXs, and my guess is late 50's -early 60's; but it is a guess!

Knives in old Rogers Bone are rarer than perhaps any of the other bone and is highly sought after by collectors. I have found that more than just a few folks selling knives on eBay, and even at some shows, will list there knives as a 'such and such model' with 'red bone' or 'brown bone' when in fact the scales on the knife actually is Rogers bone. In fact, barely two weeks ago I purchased a Case XX 6232 knife similar to yours that is Rogers bone for a pittance on eBay due to the fact that the seller had a photo that was of poor quality and a very, very brief description. It was only after the knife arrived in the mail was I able to confirm what I had..

Now as far pinpointing the actual year goes, its like waynorth stated, you need to find the folks that are very well versed on early Case knives. Luckily for you(and me and the rest of us) we are smack dab in that community of folks right here.. waynorth does indeed have an incredible array of early Case stock and I would go with his initial estimate of 1950's-60's.. There are also some other fine folks here as well that may be able to assist as.. knifeaholic comes to mind.. Perhaps he may chime in
here soon..

By the way, Where did you pick these knives up?..

Thanks a lot guys! It sure is fun finding a good one. I picked these two up at an antique/junk store. They were far back in a big case.

Neither of those is Rogers bone. Count the dots again on the 6217...those were switched to pakkawood handles in 1970 so 1970 was supposed to be the last year for bone, which would be 10 dots. If it is indeed 9 then its pretty unusual. Both very nice knives.

Thanks knifeaholic. You are right, their are 10 dots. One was filled in with a little rust!
