Heres a couple of neat firestarters I just found, this first one is called a magic wick, looks like it could be good to have for an emergency situation.

This one is just a flint and steel set with fatwood and a pouch, and 3 packs of fatwood also available. (for those who don't know where to find their own fatwood, the set looks a bit bulky and expensive)

This last one is an absorbant brick for soaking up a flammable fluid, and it burns for a while. This one I would use for the barbeque, but probably not much else.

Liam, thanks for the links.

The first one looks like an interesting DIY project -- ketchup cups from a fast food joint, a bit of sawdust, some wax, and cotton string ought to do the job. I am not sure what they added to get approximately 30-minute burn time in such a small package. Any guesses??

In boy scouts we used to make something like majic wick thing. We'd roll cardboard and tie it with twine. Then dip the cardboard in parrafin holding it by the twine. Man, those things burned for a LONG time. And water didn't affect them.

I just ordered some, they could come in handy if I need a fire real fast.
Picked up some fatwood as well, how do you prepare it? just scrape some dust off the chunk, or split some slivers off?

You can use a cardboard egg crate, melt pariffin & mix w/ sawdust and pour into the egg carton and there ya go. Good reliable fire starters.

Turns out paper egg cartons are still around, although a small % of the total. But, as Mushroom suggests, they still work when you can find them.

I remember there was a Scout project using the egg crates; fill each cup with dryer lint and then pour wax over each - makes 12 starters. I can't recall how well they worked or how long they burned though.

Check restaurants, they usually have cardboard egg cartons as they go through eggs in bulk boxes. I used them to lay out my camshafts, buckets, shims etc. while working on my motorcycle engine once. Keeps everything orderly.

shave the fatwood. The local Ace Hardware has a pack of it in the charcoal aisle. Pretty cheap, too.

Man your goonna love dealing with SIR, they are an awsome site, Bought many knives from their, they have some of the lowest prices in canada.

I have been using them for a while, probably ging to buy my first gun from there. Thinking of a sporterized lee enfield.
