I may have scored a rarity. Just got this in the mail, it’s a Recon 1 that is definitely DLC coated with the old style hollow grind, meaning that it’s likely one of the first XHP Recon 1’s that were not marked XHP.

Came a little dirty and with a chip in the edge, I’m going to see how it feels sharpening vs my other XHP R1’s. Only other possibility is that it’s a DLC coated AUS8 model, but I’ve never heard of such a thing.

the first run xhp ones weren't marked steel type on the blade only a sticker on the box. I have a couple of them. not rare per say more just early versions of the steel and coating changeover.....

I’ve been looking for one for years, mostly here and on eBay. Think I read here somewhere that only the early XHP tantos were not marked XHP, though I thought I had seen an unmarked clip point when they first came out. Now I know they definitely exist.

Sharpening it now, I can tell it’s XHP, not AUS8 as it was advertised.

not just the tantos, all the recons were this way.....I have a clip point for sure in XHP dlc not marked..
think i still have the box too and it has a sticker on it saying xhp......

Almost got the chip sharpened out, and added a Ti clip and aluminum Snaggletooth. Also added larger diameter phosphor bronze washers.

It came with some slight up and down play, which I discovered was due to someone mixing up the stop pin and lock bar pin. They’re nearly the same size, so it’s easy to do. Locks up like a vault now. Very happy with my purchase, got it for a good price. The hollow ground XHP models are the bee’s knees
