Kinda quirky, but hey, at least somebody's trying!

Specs:

Maker: Ed Schempp

Price: $500.00

Weight: 2.4oz
Blade Length: 2"
Total Length: 6"

Blade Thickness: 0.1"

Blade Width: 0.7"

Style: Folding liner lock

Blade: 52100 carbon steel sandwiched between layers of mirror polished cable Damascus

Handle: Deep blue mammoth ivory set on 15N20 liners

Comments:
A truly unique folder! The Kukri, which was used in battle and the hunt by the Gurka people was worn proudly. They honor it as a special weapon which contains a spirit of its own. Ed's folding interpretation feaures a san mai blade (52100 carbon steel is sandwiched between layers of cable Damascus). The resulting mirror polished blade is very dramatic and will have exceptional edge holding. 52100 continues to be my favorite steel for a long lasting edge. The liners are 15N20 carbon steel. A single piece of exhibition grade blue toned fossil mammoth ivory is put on the maker side. The blade has silky smooth action and is perfectly centered.

Unlikely to become my favorite shape for a pocket knife. Nice looking work, though.

not sure what he intended by polishing the cable damascus. I guess it's "different" than most who simply etch it.

Neat but not something I would care for. I can see the grain in the cable damascus, pretty kewl!!!! :D

Yvsa - did you see that blade the Ed Fowler posted in ShopTalk with the crazy etch on it?

Haven't been there in a long while Dan. Got a link?:D

here's the link:

And the pic:

and that's not damascus - it's 52100. Ed says it's the grain growth from a diff. hardening/temper.

I have some of his damascus - only problem is....it's hard to distinguish the good from the bad. Sometimes they fold in some mild steel..!!

Used to be he posted the steel type and hardness in each auction.....not the case anymore, so I stopped buying it. Some of the stuff I've seen can only ever go up to 55 HRc - which is ok, but not for real knife usage.

Dan thanks for posting Ed's beautiful blade. I have been a fan of Ed's for as long as I can recall. I asked about a Pronghorn about a year or so ago. The expensive price didn't surprise or put me off but the 7 year waiting period did. I would've been 70 by the time I got it and there's a distinct possibility that I won't be around that long.;) :D

The stuff Ed can do is amazing. Glad he's willing to share his ideas.

Yes, Ed does amazing things with steel!!!! Going back and looking at the knife over and over again and peering in its depth's the blade almost appears to be a sort of Wootz to me.
Can you see the similarities as well Dan?

the striations in the blade seem too long and uneven compared to ole-timer wootz. But it sure is pretty!

Perhaps you're talking about the hardened part?

Yes, it's like there are little jewels floating in the steel. I didn't quite see them when I first looked at the pic but they magically appeared when I looked closely.
I'm still amazed at the clarity and detail of some pix on the new Compaq and my old HP monitor if I take the time to really look. Beats the old HP computer a lot and beats the old WebTV all to hell!!!!:D

I would buy this knife if it were a 5" or 6" blade and 10" overall, but a 2" blade? Might as well get a nice little HI bilton for $35.

Regards,

Norm

That reminds me,

This past weekend at the gun & knife show, Bill Manley had a knife that had the curvature of the kukri with the edge where the spine would be on a kukri.....the handle had the reverse drop.....it was quite unusual and I don't have a photo but I could probably get one later on.....it was really different.

Guys, I got a chance to hold the Fowler knife at Willow Bow recently...before Ed sent it to it's lucky owner...she was amazing....I wanted to go cut ssomething!

There's a lot grain structure can tell somebody who is paying attention...

It is a cool knife...no doubt.

Ed Schempp makes a fine knife...even if you don't like the style..I'll bet it cuts like a mother. The price is reasonable for his work.

fenryr - photo - yes, please! :D

Shane - you got to hold it? What's the blade feel like? Is it smooth?
