Sometimes the red scales break where they are pressed on. The part you see is still Ok but it is broken inside. Many years ago I tried to glue one on with an old common glue called "Seal All". It worked, but the glue melted the scale wherever it touched it leaving it unsightly.
Well, I recently dropped my favorite red SAK and the same thing happened. I first tried a common craft-type hot-glue called "Surebonder". It did not melt the scale, but it did not bond. I then tried "Quick Grab". It bonded well and did not melt the scale. I would use Quick Grab again for this purpose.
This was at the toothpick end, so I tried to get as little in the toothpick channel as possible and then I pushed the toothpick in and out until the glue was dry. This was sort of by the seat of my pants, but it came out perfect.
I had called Swiss Army Brands and they no longer send out scales to replace broken ones. They used to, along with instructions. The rep was very nice, but he said I would have to send it in and he also said there was a possiblility they might not have the scale. This was an old 84mm Tinker. Does anyone know if there is another source for SAK scales? I am all set for now, but would like to be able to get new ones and fix SAKs myself. (If you do it right, pressing them on is a snap.)
