Found a glue for red Vic. scales

Sometimes the red scales break where they are pressed on. The part you see is still Ok but it is broken inside. Many years ago I tried to glue one on with an old common glue called "Seal All". It worked, but the glue melted the scale wherever it touched it leaving it unsightly.

Well, I recently dropped my favorite red SAK and the same thing happened. I first tried a common craft-type hot-glue called "Surebonder". It did not melt the scale, but it did not bond. I then tried "Quick Grab". It bonded well and did not melt the scale. I would use Quick Grab again for this purpose.

This was at the toothpick end, so I tried to get as little in the toothpick channel as possible and then I pushed the toothpick in and out until the glue was dry. This was sort of by the seat of my pants, but it came out perfect.

I had called Swiss Army Brands and they no longer send out scales to replace broken ones. They used to, along with instructions. The rep was very nice, but he said I would have to send it in and he also said there was a possiblility they might not have the scale. This was an old 84mm Tinker. Does anyone know if there is another source for SAK scales? I am all set for now, but would like to be able to get new ones and fix SAKs myself. (If you do it right, pressing them on is a snap.)

You can check with rotokid@sosakonline.com for new scales (I don't know if he has 84mm.). I can send you 84mm used scales if you send me your name and address. Many people find "Goop" to be great for reattaching scales as it stays flexible and the scales can be removed later if desired. The scales are a cellulose based product so avoid most solvent based materials.

If the 84mm tinker is still being made, I can't see why they would not have scales. After all the Victorinox warrentee is pretty clear. What would be their other alternative if they can't fix up a 84mm, send you a new 91mm tinker? If not, then it may be time to consider some nice wood scales.

jackknife: The rep implied that on knives more than five years old, the scales might be made differently. He never said that they didn't have 84mm. I have only replaced scales once and that was a long time ago, so I am just repeating what I heard him to say. If anyone knows what interchangeability factors (if any) there are, please chime in.
