I read that at the library recently and came away pretty impressed. It had step-by-step instructions on weaving baskets, butchering a dear, starting fire by friction, shelter creation and other core survival skills. Good pictures and a very accessible writing style. Teaches you some great primitive skills, but doesn't try to shy away completely from modern technology. In it he advocates Victorinox Classics which is featured in a photo of him cleaning fish, and has basic instructions on how to use tires found on the side of the road to sole self-made moccasins. Sounded like a good idea, I plan to test it out sometime soon.

I haven't read many books on the subject, so far it's mainly been corresponance over the internet for me. This one seemed very well put together though, and it's easy to find for under 15 $.

I bought a couple of books by Thomas Elpel. He seems like an honest guy with a good dose of common sense. I particularly liked his philosophical approach to drinking untreated water. He also had a website... which I seem to recall has the word 'hollowtop' in the address. I haven't examined the book that you are referring to.

The tyres for sandals thing was one of the main reasons I purchased one of the books. The idea is good, but unfortunately all the tyres I've found lately around here seem to be reinforced with fine, hard wires which makes them almost impossible to cut. I guess I might find some older tyres without the wire if I search long enough, but then I may as well just go to the shoe warehouse and get myself a cheap pair of Chinese sandals.

I have some Teva sandals. I really like some of the models that Teva have produced. They are hard-wearing and arent badly affected by water. It will soon be sandal season again down here.

Those are radials you're finding. It sounds like you need old bias ply tires from no less than 30 years ago. Otherwise, tin snips will be your friend.

This is another awesome survival book...

It covers everything from survival in the dessert to sea to mountains to snow and beyond. It tells you how to identify plants and animal tracks. How to build shelters of all kinds depending on where you are at. Each page is filled with tons of photos. It also shows you how to use a compass and how to read the weather.

I can't tell you how many times I've read this book. I used to keep it in the "library".:p
