Greetings, all! I'm brand new to the forum. I'm doing some remodeling in my house. On the top shelf of one of the closets I'm removing I found a Gerber BMF knife. It has a serial number of 1538X. It appears to be in pretty decent shape. Compass and instructions in the sheath pocket (found them on accident this morning!) Can anyone tell me anything more about it? I'm just curious. It's a big knife. Maybe Rambo lived there before I did. :)

My brother is more into these knives than I am.The Gerber BMF is a pretty hot knife. I'll give you 20 bucks for it right now, but I think he said they are valued at about ten times that.

Wow. Quick hijack!

pb320, you're ok. Offers are not ok, as all sales are to be in the correct forum, even if somewhat tongue in cheek :)

The Gerber BMF was made to be a general purpose camping/survival knife. It is a high quality knife. From comments by people that have used them, they are tough. I think the steel is one of the 440 varieties (A, B, or C). They sold for $100 to $120 when in production (IIRC). That's a discount price. Retail was over $200. I think they were made in the 90's. For some reason, the better quality discontinued made in America Gerbers are going up in value. If yours is not as new with the box, I would keep it and just put it back for whenever a big tough knife might come in handy.

Very nice! Thanks for the information. It was cool to find it stashed away in the closet. I just wasn't sure if it was a decent blade or not. Figured I'd head here and ask the experts! I'm sure whoever left it behind was probably bummed about it. :D

No prob! I shot Gerber an email this morning, and didn't get a whole lot of info from them. That's why I listed what I found with the knife, and the markings on it. Apparantly the serial numbers don't mean much. :)

The older Gerbers are going up in value because ever since Fiskars took over at Gerber, quality is down.

You have found a very nice using knife. I used one in the 90s for a boat knife while halibut and salmon fishing in alaska never rusted although fileted many a king salmon and halibut kept a good edge enjoy

All I've ever found iin the walls doing that kind of work is beer or gin bottles (really).

I found dust but it was special antique dust-sold it at the local flea market. Very old.
Am needing to rip more walls down but am waiting until summer as I as hate cold breezes. But seriously I'd like to go back to the house I grew up in and see what I left behind since I use to hide things like toys, knives, ball cards, under attic floor and step boards and behind the wall.
Hmm?
