Found a rabbit nest in my yard! (pics)

My dad was out mowing and came inside going, "Brandon bring your machete out here. I found something." He was thinking he'd found a rat or something in a small pile of grass near the edge of the house. So I grab my camera and machete and head out there and I poke at the little nest, gently lifting layers of grass away. I really didn't want to kill anything unless it was dangerous, so I was being pretty careful.

I finally get the nest exposed and there look to be about 8 tiny rabbits inside! Two of them jumped out and started running away. My dog grabbed one but I rescued it. So I took the dog inside, then had to hunt around the yard and find the rabbits to put back in their nest. Rabbit #2 was hopping all over the place and even jumped out of my hands twice in a row when I caught it, but I managed to catch it before it hit the ground both times. The second time it started squeaking like crazy! I guess it was pretty scared. So I tucked them back inside the nest and packed the grass back over them. It was pretty cool IMO.

Neat!

Where's momma? Did she come back?

Take more pictures when they come out!:)

You dad wanted you to chop them up with a machete?

.

You will never see them again...The mother rabbit will smell you scent on the babies and move them in the night..check tomorrow and you will find the nest empty I am guessing.

That would be sad.

Nah he just saw something move under the grass and thought it was a snake or rat, so he had me grab it just to be safe.

I didn't see the mom.

I had a guy on another forum tell me the mom would abandon them b/c of my scent, but that's a myth. I have no idea whether or not she will move them. I guess it doesn't really matter either way because I don't plan on bothering them again, but maybe I'll check tomorrow. I read that if they were hopping around and 5 inches long that they may be independent of the mother, but they seemed to be waiting around for her to me. I'll have to check back.

Hey Guys...

Cool...

Those bunnies are only days from being on their own anyway..
1-3 days more and mom won't come back to the nest, and the bunnies are on their own..They are quite capable of survival on their own now.

They'll be fine, it's time...

I believe that human scent and abandonment is a myth..(If Not myth, then somewhat Exaggerated )I've handled alot of baby rabbits, coons, snunks and such, and have never witnessed the mother leaving it's babys to die.

I followed a brand new set of baby rabbits from birth, handled them almost daily and they grew up fine and left the nest.

You can handle baby birds without that fear, because birds don't have taste or smell.

Hey buddy , the only thing your missing is some carrots , celery and a few 'taters , some soup stock and you got one fine stew there ! :)

Looks like Ren was right. I checked back today and found the nest empty. Either the mother moved them or they are out on their own somewhere. I'm kinda sad but I guess they didn't need me bothering them more anyway.

I'm very jealous. I love bunnies. Please check a couple more times to make sure that they are really gone and don't need your help. Very cute!

Yep, still gone. I've been checking every day. I'm sad to see them go. :(

My dog found a nest like that last spring.

The rabbits had a tougher time with her than they did with you.
