Found a Savannah - locally!

I couldn't stand it - I've been looking for one for months. While perusing the local yuppee sporting goods/knife emporium, I noted what looked like a Savannah, #120620, in their display case. Closer examination revealed the red liner in a dull red - and a brown & beige Micarta handle - not the bright red and black of the catalog (Got me again - the Titan Worker was similarly 'off color'!). The highly polished Bohler N690 steel was noted - nicer than I expected. The price was quite good - and got better - I was pleased, dull liner and wrong handle color included. Quite sharp, too. No thumb jimping - and the only 'hot spot' was the sharp finger guard edges and the blade - right where that thumb jimping would have started, too. Well balanced - a joy to hold in my tired medium+ hands. The black leather sheath has floral carvings on the sewn edage - and seems suitably secure. Very nice knife, if not a $400 knife. Hard to fimd, mail order... but one was in my dealer's case all along!

Well, I took a few comparative pictures - first, shown sheathed with a KaBar/Becker BK2:

That mirror polish is something!

PS The blade thickness is .141" - not the 3/16" (.1875") as described.

The Savannah is a great looking knife. I have been eying it in the catalogue, but couldn't pull the trigger. Will it be a user? I would hate to ruin the mirror polish, but would hate it even more to see it in a display case.

The BR Gameskeeper was bought as a user some years back. It is comfortable as a camping/bushcraft knife. Oddly, it's A2 steel has not grown a patina to speak of. I had intended the Savannah to supplement it, as I don't hunt now. I am just not sure now - it is comfortable 'in the hand'. It's steel should be fine, if a bit thinner than I thought (The Boker site and catalogs are in error - it is 3.5mm/.141", not the 3/16"/.1875 " listed. Terry said it was a translation error.). I like it - and it was less dear than it's MSRP would suggest - I was fortunate. Nice knife, I just don't think it's a $400 one, however.

Very nice purchase and lucky you found one locally. I've been wanting one too, but won't pull the trigger until I see one in person. I would use if for field dressing deer and hogs while hunting, and it seems like a good knife for that. Congrats on a great find.
