Hey all, not long ago I posted needing help deciding on an anvil stand. Well I found one! a great absolutely HUGE section of oak tree about three or so feet in diameter and the real cool part is it's about 5 or 6 miles from the house right along the edge of the highway! So I went over and cut a four foot( plus or minus) section off of it. Feelin pretty good about my luck I proceeded to manhandle this gargantuan chunk of oak up to my truck thinking " I can get it" Well long story short the potential anvil stand is still not in my backyard, and i've been laid up all weekend barely able to move!
What a knucklehead! Once I heal up and get the damn thing here I'll attempt to post a pic so you can laugh and call me dumb names!:(

No one is going to laugh at that. Backs need looking after. I think a lot of us have let our ambition confused with our ability.

I hurt my back 20 years ago when an electrician. One you hurt it you need to take extra care. If you have not seen a doctor yet please get it checked to see if it is a strain or an injury. It is not worth taking risks.

Hope it is just a strain and your up and about soon. My claim to fame was lifing a heavy concreat lid to a cable pit never been the same. I don't suffer like a lot of people do but I have to be careful.

The Beatles said it best.

OOOH I get by with a little help from my friends....

When me and my neighbor hauled out my doug fir butt cut we stacked two smaller cuts like steps up to my truck. Three little lifts is easier then one big grunt. When I got home I just rolled it out of the truck bed and used a hand truck to get it into the shop. It is the most solid anvil base I have ever used. It took some chainsawing to get the top leveled but it was worth the work.

Although the combined weight of the base and the anvil is over 300 Lbs. I can still tip it over and barrel roll it if I need to move it.

Are you sure you need a 3 ft. dia piece? That chunk being green oak is probably 250-300 lbs. It makes my back hurt just thinking about wrestling with it.

Not to rain on your already rainy parade day, but 3' is really too big, as it won't allow you to get really close to the anvil. That's another benefit of the type of stand I have, I can lean right up next to the anvil, but still have my feet firmly planted on the floor.

I'd highly recommend, IF you get that piece home, that you cut it down on the sides :)

To quote an old song by Little Feat,

..."you'll really know you're Over the Hill,
when your mind starts making promises
your body can't fill...."

Edited for Mike's peace of mind...

Edited to remove correction, once Steve came to senses...;):D

"Old Folks Boogie"...my theme song.

Thank you, sir, made me start a "Feat Fest" this afternoon down here in the shop.

Kevin, I sincerely hope you didn't blow you're back out. Be very, very careful for months..... then just be very careful after that. I can promise you that you don't want to live with a couple herniated discs in yer back. :(

Well that little bit of lyric just dates all of us who recognizes and especially me who saw them live many times.

Defintely wait until your back heals, long soaks in epsom salts and hot water and no more over doing it! Get a handtruck!

Yeah nick that was the plan but wouldn't you know my ever present luck of the irish(nobody said it was good luck) struck again and on the way home I looked to see if it was still there and lo and behold someone had taken it. I thought since it was so convienient I would just cut the sides to give me a good base without spending any money. At least there is still a big chunk left (for now) but the next time I won't be such an idiot, and I'll use help!

I feel like I put my chiropractor's kids through college! An old powerlifting injury that worsens with age....

David Farmer, you used to powerlift? I remember a Philip Farmer.
I used to as well. I ended up with surgery on 2 disks. I'm wondering if they'll stiffen up in a few more years. So far so good...

All I know is, the older I get (and the fatter my beer storage area gets) the more fragile my back gets. Almost threw it out the other day leaning over to pull a plug out of the wall socket. Sigh...

epsom salts and Blue Stuff is a standard around my house.

Old age isn't in your mind...it's in your joints. :p
