Recommendation? Found an old (and shitty) fixed blade knife in my grandpa's basement. How can I make it more durable?

So I found an old fixed blade knife in my grandpa's basement, it looks and feels pretty flimsy and not durable at all. I started sharpening the blade with pretty good overall results, but I feel like it's not sturdy at all. Any tips to strengthen the building quality?

(Pic of the knife. Added electrical tape because the handle looks terrible and did not felt very grippy)

It's simple really. First as has been mentioned you need to replace the handle. I would recommend either something in micarta, wood or G10. Next you should replace that pommel. I personally prefer stainless but in a pinch aluminum or most other metals will do. After that, the guard has to go something nice again in stainless, nickel silver or bronze would probably do the trick. Finally replace that blade with something that is a bit more durable and possibly that has a profile more to your liking. You can get everything you need at someplace like Jantz or Knifekits.com. It should just take you a few hours and when you are done you will have made that knife from Grandpa's basement nearly unrecognizable but a LOT more durable. Good luck!

I agree the knife looks "shitty". But, to verify the degree of shittyness can you tell us, or post pic, of any marks on that knife and sheath?
So we know exactly what we are looking at.

Triton: All of them. Get back to work! *crack of a whip*
