Found an old Schrade today... (pic heavy)

Dropped by the weekly swap meet this morning to see if there was anything worth looking at today... And there was! One stand that I've bought from before had a lot of old knives up today: Old scout knives from Kabar and Imperial, older Bucks, a few multitools, some old bayonets... And Schrades. I picked up this 165, which is a pattern that I'd been looking for for some time now. He also had a Deerslayer in rather better shape and an almost-new two-blade Old Timer folding hunter.

The knife needed some TLC, lots of red rust and black patina, but the handle and guard are rock-solid and the blade is almost unsharpened. The sheath is a loss but that's a minor thing. I'm happy. :D

After some work. Still has some hard red rust I need to get rid of.

That looks like it'll clean up pretty good considering what it appears to have been subjected to. Nice rescue!

Thanks! The seller said that his son had left it out in the rain. It certainly looks like it, but most of the rust wiped right off.

You're going to love that. That is one of the best knife designs out there in my never humble opinion.

I do love it. The carbon steel takes a wicked edge. Now I just have to find a good sheath for it.

Edit: Found that it fits pretty well in a short Kabar sheath I have. Now I can carry it! :D

I have to agree. That knife design is good for everything outdoors. A fine camp knife, a great hunting knife, and a great trail knife. I don't know if they were original Schrade designs, but to me, that and the Golden Spike are the two best fixed designs Schrade ever made.

If you are looking for a sheath, you could buy the offshore version available at the South American Jungle site and you would be set with a nice new leather sheath. Take the other knife and put it in your tool or camp box and you would be set.

Congrats on the great find. Knowing I was going to put it back to work would put a smile on my face.
