Found an older Gerber MK II in my closet

I found this knife back around 1989 or so. I was young and didn't know a thing about knives. I just dug it out the other day after remembering about it (I had placed it in an old fishing tackle box I no longer use). The handle is chipped and scratched, prob 75 percent of the finish on it left. Looks like the butt of the handle was used to pound things because the finish is worn completely and its flat. I do remember when I found it, it had grind marks on the blade. There is no rust anywhere. The serial number on her starts with C415.
I have been in the market for a nice fixed blade and was wondering if it would be worth it to have this professionally sharpned and buy a holster for her (outdoor/hunting use) or should I put her back away and order a RAT4/5?

Thanks for the info. And I hope I posted this in the correct forum.

Go for a RAT. It's a much better user, and the MK II is more of a collectible these days. :)

The Gerber Mark II is a classic Vietnam era knife but I wouldn't even consider carrying one in the woods. I would go with a Rat Cutlery RC-4. Be aware that there is an Ontario RAT line and a Rat Cutlery, I prefer and recommend the later.

do some research, find out if that gerber is worth anything.
I've been considdering picking up an old one one day, they are very collectible.

Get you a rat for your outdoor chores, or maybe a sog seal pup, they are pretty decent as well.

good luck, late.

I was given a Gerber Guardian II in 1992, it had no finish on the handle. I immediately contacted Gerber who confirmed it was Vietnam era issue and at that time theywere prepared to refurbish it for me.

I decided to leave it as it was and it has since become the conerstone of my collection and I love it more today and when I got it. Despite dozens of new additions, none feel as 'right' in the hand as does it.

I suggest putting your Gerber carefully away and enjoy still having it in another 20 years.

As for a woods knife, there are so many good recommendations already that are all great choices.

I have one of 1979 with a tool steel l6 blade but I am keeping it as collector item. Here is it
