Just a little to set the scene:
In my town, the maintenance department/ water department (with which I am employed over the summer) borders the school. Last week, the maintenance guy was mowing the school yard when all of a sudden, I heard him hit something hard. I thought nothing of it and when along my merry way. That afternoon, he came over to chat. He keeps a bucket on the top of the mower deck put stuff in ( golf balls, trash, etc.) I look in there and there was a tomahawk head and a hatchet.
The hawk head had a huge gash in it and was not salvageable, but the hatchet was comparatively unscathed. It just had a gash in the rubber handle. So I asked him "So, Jack, what are you going to do with that hatchet?" he said, "Nothing, do you want it?".
Obviously I did. So I took it home after work and knocked the rust off and roughed out an edge. I put some temporary electric tape on the handle. I can barely make out "Royal Ranch" and below that is an etching of a deer. I'm guessing it is just some generic farm store brand. But either way, it doesn't matter. Easy come, easy go.
I'm glad I didn't get that Estwing I was eyeballing because now I have a tool that I won't feel guilty about (ab)using.
