Every now and then one of us finds a pocket knife laying where someone lost it. Looking at them, we can only imagine the life it's had!

I found this Sabre Japan trapper on the sidewalk today as I was walking around town. When I found it I wasn't sure what to do. It was laying on the sidewalk in a more industrial part of town. I almost left it there, so that whoever dropped it might come by and find it if they were looking for it. Much of the foot traffic in the area I was in is from the homeless people who live on the outskirts of town. I decided to go ahead and take it with me.

It looks like it has quite a tale to tell! I know this was an inexpensive knife, but it looks like it was used well and cared for. The celluloid handles are cracking, and the bolsters are scuffed. The blades are both sharpened down, but I can tell that the person who did it knew what they were doing. It looks like someone was doing some electrical work with the clip blade, as you can see where it is scarred by a spark. The snap is great on both blades. I like it's sleek curves.

Here It is:

That's a good find.

I've recounted here before, my Dad used to have a Japan-produced Sabre 624 fishing knife. He'd used it extensively on our trout-fishing adventures in NM & CO, when I was a kid/teenager in the '70s, and on into the late '80s, after I'd been away in the military and he'd retired. I had hoped to inherit that knife from him someday. But, unfortunately, he'd layed it down next to the stream somewhere, after cleaning some fish one day. He forgot to pick it up before leaving. Never got it back. I can only hope that knife was also picked up by somebody who cared enough to understand the possible significance of it. Nothing fancy about it, but it held great sentimental value, for me. A whole lot of my favorite memories were, in some ways, attached to that knife.

Great find! I remember Sabre knives being sold in a local Hardware (when I was a kid).

Yes, I do too. I still have a Sabre melon tester with mother-of-toilet-seat scales. Got it at the ACE hardware. They also had Case and Ka-Bar.

I have an old Sabre Peanut with that same handle material their's no knife like a free knife as for me I never find anything.

That's the problem with finding a knife. You have to wonder if the person who lost it loved knives as much as we do. If not, at least did they love THIS knife? It is hard to take it and make it your own, but then again, it would be near impossible to find the owner. The best we can do is to treat it like it is loved, and use it as it was meant to be, with all caring and respect, and hope the unhappy original owner at least imagines someone giving it what it deserves. I know I'd want someone who finds a knife I lose to give it love, and that helps when thinking about those that are gone. :D;)

My dad told me he had a knife he found on a trip out of town and I could have it if I wanted it. I expected some cheap folder that I'd just throw away. Much to my surprise it was a case peanut with the cv blades and yellow handle. I feel sorry for whoever lost it, but I have carried it everyday since and cant imagine not having it in my pocket now.

I almost choked. Good one.

I've found a few knives, my father has, sometimes friends or family come to me () to find out if they have something valuable. One of the neatest ones was an old folder my little brother found. My father's property is part of an old farm, that was about a hundred acres (now chopped up into ten acre parcels). He found it on the old fence line/logging road. He is not the knife nut his brother is ;) , but he is still enamored of that old knife.

Found another one today! I'm doing some archeology fieldwork near Lone Pine, Ca. This one's seen some use :D

It looks to be a four bladed equal end pen or senator, with mother of pearl scales:

I love Lone Pine!

You do any of the work they had when they widened 395? My brother was one of the State Reps for a lot of that fieldwork.

No, I wasn't out here then, I think that happened before I came into this profession! It is a beautiful area, though.

Funny how this place brinks back items from your past. Growing up I had the same melon tester from ACE and love your description. I have met people that love there knives like we do and they give no thought about if it is quality or cheap junk. I have an uncle that has never really had steady work and he gets by with knives which some would think is junk and he treats it like it’s the best.

Dad did find a knife on a trip once, it was a .99 center from the gas and go, but the side was broken.

I was off work sick today so I spent some time in this forum, which reminded me that I had a sodbuster that could use a sharpening and wondered if I'd ever use it. I went in to my knife box and got it out and also found one of my father in laws old knives that I'd been trying to revive and managed to get a half decent edge on it, so I figured I'd search on here for it and low and behold it is the exact same Sabre as the original post!

I'm going to bring it to work and have a guy try to sharpen it, I could only get so far with the sharpmaker.

I've been trying to find one all week. I inherited about 100 knives a year ago. This winter I was snowshoeing in the woods behind my house and I had a large old Western folder with me in the sheeth. I must have taken a leak and the sheeth must have slid off my belt. The knife was in excellent condition. It wouldn't normally be a huge deal but it was one of my fathers favorites. I've been metal detecting out there this week looking for it with no luck. I'm going back out today because the snow is gone. I probably won't find it but I'm gonna give it one more try today. I just hate to think it's sitting out there, wet in the sheeth.
