I have many knives like alot of people here, but have always had a soft spot for my first knife the Buck 110. I have had 3 of them since I was a young. One is in storage, the other went missing after the wife's spring cleaning a few years ago  , so I bought the one I carry today. My son was cleaning out a shed and found a damp box where the roof was leaking. In the box was my first Buck 110 still in it's leather sheath. I'm almost positive it was the first. I looked it up on the date sheet but didn't see it. It has one dot on the left of the 110 and two dots on the right.

The sheath had green mold and the blade has some rust here and there. The spine has a good bit lot of surface rust and the grip seems a bit misaligned (swollen?) I'm looking for the best was to refurbish this knife as i want to stark carrying it again and ass the one I have now down to one of my sons.

Thanks!

Pictures would help. I'm pretty sure if you send it to buck they'll fix it up for a small cost, if you want to go that route.

Buck has a great rep for their 'spa treatment' of old knives sent in for rejuvenation. Re-condition, re-sharpen, or whatever. Might contact them and see what they can do. Only issues that might come up is, if they have to replace major parts. Older knives with different blade/handle materials may not be able to be restored in exactly the same original 'new' condition, if at all. But, contact them first. They've built a rep for often going above & beyond, in dressing up old knives.

The rust will come off with a green scrub pad, and the brass will clean up nicely with metal polish. The loose scale is another deal altogether. I'd send pics to Buck CS along with a call and see what their take is on it. New scales may be in order.

Sweet find! and I'm in the process of restoring my machete , and it was in worse condition than this.

What worked for me was first WD-40ing the blade letting it soak for about 5-10minutes. Then I went through the grinds with sandpaper and manually sanded it down ,blade , spine , edge and all.Now i'm re-sharpening it.

For me , my blade was totally flat , if you do that you risk grinding down the Buck logo as well as the fingernail groove and other details.
I would suggest taking it apart and soaking the blade in WD-40 and grinding the edge in very very to fine sandpaper ( it's not bad enough that you need coarse sandpaper ) Then re sharpen it , as for wood/metal handle I won't give advice so that you don't ruin the knife on my account.

Best of luck to you,

Do not take the knife apart as they are not for the first timers weekend project. I've never seen a 440C blade that rusted. I believe it was created from chemicals leaching out of the leather as it lay in the water. AS mentioned the brass handle will clean up with no problem with a brass polish. The blade--- maybe... If you care to try, soak it in Break Free CLP for 1-2 days. Then gently rub it with a Scotch-Brite pad or 000 steel wool. BE CAREFUL to not over rub other areas of the blade as it's fully hollow ground and not a flat grind! Not in the nail nick area as well. The scales look to need replacing and they come in matched pairs.
I would not recommend someone attempting this. The wood on your model 110 is solid Macassar Ebony. Buck now uses laminate scales. If you want to send your knife in to Buck they will do your a bang up job for a little dough. Do not send it in to Buck's Custom Shop. Send it Attn. Joe Houser to BKI , 660 S. Lochsa St., Post Falls, ID. 83854 . E-mail him first and give him a heads up its coming with the photos you posted here. jhouser@Buckknives.com . With a note of what you want done and try to keep your blade. DM

As someone who recently found his old Buck 110 in a box and sent it in for warranty service (the tip was broken off), I can attest that Buck took great care of my knife. They retipped it, sharpened it up, polished the bolsters, scales, and blade. It had a mirror finish when I got it back, looked brand new.

All for the cost of shipping.
Definitely check with Buck and see if they can help you out.
