Found some old knives

I was cleaning up some stuff at home and I found a couple of knives from my high school days.

One of them made me laugh. I had ordered it from one of the ads in the back of a comic book. Two lock back knives for $1.98!! They looked like a stilleto in the ad, they were pretty cheezy looking when they arrived. I'm glad that I still have one. The blade is about 1.5", the steel is pretty soft.

The other one I found was a Utica Kutmaster Stockman's Knife. The main blade is marked "tungsten" stainless, jigged bone scales, made in the USA. I think I got this one at Brookstone, this was probably back in the early 70's.

Finding the Kutmaster was one of those small blessings. I have been wanting to get back to carrying a slippie, so I had been looking for a stockman's knife. Then I got laid off from work last week:(. So finding an old friend to carry was great. It needs sharpening, but nothing major and maybe a little oil.

Finding these knives and seeing how sharp they are really showed me how much my sharpening technique has improved over the years (much of it since I got sucked into knife making and Blade forums). I still have the same Norton India combination stone that they got sharpened with years ago

That's a great find. It feels good to know an old knife was a worthwhile deal.

I bought a few things from Brookstone catalogs, then they opened a store in NYC. I was hooked. I have their pocketwrench on my desk right here now. I still have the Tapio Wirkkala puukko I got from the catalog.

Sorry to hear about the job loss. Glad you found an old friend though. Take some pics!

Thanks for the memories.

I bought two of those little black lockbacks, would have been about 1972 . I was disappointed that they were so small. Mine got taken away from me in school.

Yep. I had those same little lockbacks. Must have been little ads in Fur Fish and Game or something like that. They were kind of neat really. I recall them being halfway sturdy but that was a long time ago. They were a novely. I remember waiting about 2 months for them to come in the mail.

I saw them refered to elsewhere in the forum. I'll bet a lot of boys (and men) back in the early '70s bought those.

One thing we can know for sure given that time frame...not made in China:rolleyes:

Dane,

That is about the right time frame when I got mine. The size was indeed disappointing, live and learn.

I guess I got away with a lot in high school. I used to often have my Buck 110 or Buck fixed blade (I think it was a Pathfinder, ~6-7" blade) with me. I would sharpen pencils in class with them, none of my teachers said a word.

Got the kutmaster sharpened up last night. The steel felt pretty soft compared to some of the newer steels like SV30. My son thought it was odd that it looked smaller then my Benchmade De Javoo (mini), but was a little heavier.
