One of the perceived disadvantages of titanium scales is their tendency to scratch and mar, especially if the scales were originally bead blasted by the knife's manufacturer. In an attempt to find someone who could bead blast knife scales to restore their finish, I recently contacted Motor City Watch Works http://www.motorcitywatchworks.com via email to see if they provided this type of service. Motor City Watch Works (MCWW) is a company that provides watch repair services including the bead blasting of watch cases, bezels, etc. (If you click on "Services" on the MCWW home page you will see a description of the bead blasting services that they can provide).
I received a response the same day from Jay at MCWW, who indicated that he has bead blasted the scales on some of his own knives in the past, and would gladly provide bead blasting services to other knife owners for a very reasonable fee. Jay indicated that, if the knife was a folding knife, he would also disassemble the knife and then reassemble the knife as part of the service. Given that Jay repairs watches by profession, it would be reasonable to assume that he has the skills necessary to assemble and disassemble a folding knife, and to provide high quality bead blasting services. Jay estimated under $50 for some scales if disassembly wasn't required, but I assume this would vary depending upon the complexity of the job. Jay can be reached at MotorCityWatchWorks@hotmail.com
