I been doing some digging, haven't found much information.

It looked like it had been in the woods for a long time. It had substantial pitting, from being left in the mud. But it did clean up pretty nice.

dunno what I did with the pictures from when I found it. thought I found an ancient artifact, felt like indiana jones haha

Edited for truth.

I found this in my Dads garage. I forgot to take before pictures.

You've said you can't find the before photos. But it would be very helpful to see them if you can locate them. We might be able to tell more of its construction in the rust and the patterns therein.
I have several hatchets that have a "drop forged" stamp and nothing else and I haven't been able to figure those ones out yet.
Regardless of who made it it's a fine looking hatchet and looks to be good quality. You did I nice job cleaning it up!
Congrats on a cool find and a nice hatchet!

Found this old hatchet while hiking. Was pretty rusty and corroded. I can't find the before picture though.

I am not sure your hatchet actually had 1914 stamp.
The shape and location of HAND MADE look similar. My gut tells mi it was some kind of anniversary model (Little bit unusual to see a date stamp on carpenter's hatchet). Maybe AA&Tco 25th anniversary?
Depending on the year of production the suspects could be Robert Mann>AA&Tco

Someone will come along and tell you about who exactly made it,we discussed it here a couple years back, but i forgot:)...
Good quality tool,in good shape, anyway, possibly(probably has a welded in blade/hard-plated poll).
Don't take the meaning of that stamp literally, however, let it serve as a reminder that there indeed is much actual human hand/eye in many older axes.
I have a hewing hatchet with that stamp, love it dearly, use it all the time.
Enjoy it,take good care of it:)

Yes, a roofers hatches for shakes and shingles. I have that one (or very close). My hatchet had a short thick bevel that I smoothed down and a small eye. So, it was not made for penetrating during a chop. I'll try to find my photo. DM
