I did a search on youtube for damascus steel knife and found this video there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6CQ0WtJxxI

I was thinking that maybe youtube would be a good outlet for howto videos on all parts of knife making. I found this video interesting ( I am a beginner and getting my $50 knife shop book tomorrow from bookstore local ) but I see alot of things left out in it ( just from reading this forum I could tell that this skipped around and left out alot of good info but should be still useful as a howto video ).

If anyone has any good videos for knife making it would be interesting ( and ease of use for you on storage ) to store them on a place like youtube.

Thanks everyone for all the useful info I have found on this site.

I was wanting to make damascus knives old school ( well old school in terms only ) and use very little power tools at all but after seeing that power hammer work I am thinking about changing my mind. It looks home made ( leaf spring on top ) but I could be wrong.

I have seen alot of people talk about stock removal ver forging for beginners ( on other websites ). When I was a 6 y/o an old man moved next door to me. He setup a blacksmith shop and started out paying me $1 an hour to crank the blower. It took over a year before he would even let me near the hammers or anvil. I did learn alot from him but we never made anything like a knife or sword. He did alot of wagon making and I helped him build one from scratch. He did not believe in power tools ( even had a hand crank grinder ) and I wanted to do the same with my knife making.

What does everyone else think? Is the power tools the way to go or does it make you feel better about your work to know you did it all by hand?

Pattern welding with a hammer is alot of work. You also get more steel loss since you have more hammer/heat cycles. There are alot of knifemakers that still do it with just a hammer and anvil but to say it's challenging would be an understatement. I have done several pattern weld blades and after 3-4 hours of drawing, cutting, welding and forging to shape you get it ground and then find voids and delames. Very frustrating to say the least.

When the day comes that I get a press or power hammer I will jump in with both feet but for now it's just an occasional practice session.

From what I have seen you could make a power hammer. I have not found any free plans ( don't know if they have any in the $50 knife shop book or not ) but the motor and leaf spring one I have seen should be alot easer to put together then a belt grinder. I think I will break down and build a power hammer after I get my feet wet with some normal hammering. I was told that after I hammered out 1 or 2 I would spend the rest of the time working on my power hammer lolz

Amazing video it was really informative it answerd a couple of questions that I had. Only thing was that guys voice was sorta scary.
