I was exploring an old copper mine/farm in Poplar WI this past summer and dug this beast out of pile of rotting wood and pigeon crap haha!

That's pretty cool, going to finish it? I bet it would become one of your favorite FB's.

Jealous, not of the find , nice though. You exploring! stinks planting roots. maybe one day I'll get to go again.

Haven't decided what to do with it yet, thought about using for a decoration, but the wife wasn't keen on it haha!

I never find neat stuff like that out in the woods. I would love to find an old knife like that to restore. It would be a great project.
Although if it was buried in a pile of pigeon poop in front of me I seriously doubt I would have found it.

The only reason I found it was because I started looking for salvageable boards in the pile. I did get some really nice wood inside of an out building, I think it's hickory, but not sure.

Looks like an inexpensive butcher knife designed to hang from a nail. Seems like the end of the tang was just bent around to hold the handle on. May have used a washer to keep the blade from biting into the handle. Are there any markings on the blade?

I don't think it has any collector value. Take a couple of good pictures of it and then restore it. Use some of the hickory you recovered for the handle. Go to the maintenance sub forum or the knife makers sub forum for advise.

Could it be the remains of a Hudson Bay type knife - although I thought Hudson Bays had a full tang.

It would be worth an attempt to try to figure out what it is before you use it as raw material for a new project.
