I'm incredibly tempted by that 20" AK. Of all the khuks I've handled over the years, a 20" AK has not been one of them. 12, 15, 16.5, 18...but never a 20 or 25. I'm going to let this one marinate. My wife wants to go to chuchill downs for their mothers day at the track thing today. Who knows, maybe she'll win me enough to buy that gorgeous AK:)...but I bet we come home a little poorer:p

Is the ak a chiruwa?cwd

Just for a little clarification: Any chiruwa AK is going to have slabs on the grip with visible pins holding them on and a visible spine from the top down. If its not mentioned, then it'll be a peened-through tang like they normally come with:)

15" sirupati...I'll take it! ...but i have a strong intuition the ladybug really ought to come with it. What if i kick in an extra buck?

& BTW...how do i pay?

I am not well versed on these blades, but the email from Yangdu stated that the ak was a chiruwa. That is why I entered agreement to purchase it. Thanks.cwd

cwd:

There must have been a misunderstanding in the emails, since the pictures show that none of the khukuris in this DOTD have chiruwa handles. Perhaps Yangdu meant that she has one in stock, but it would not be the one pictured in this thread.

In most cases I personally prefer chiruwa type handles, but with a 20" 45 oz AK, you might be better off with the non-chiruwa full tang handle as shown in the above photo. If you do any chopping with a monster of this size and weight there's going to be a lot of shock and vibration transferred to your hand and wrist. The chiruwa type handle has your hand in direct contact with the metal along the top and bottom edges, and probably transmits a lot more of the force of impact to your hand.

Of course if you mainly want this AK as a piece of functional art, as many do, then by all means go with a chiruwa version. However, 20" 45 oz CAKs might be few and far between.

Go to the Himalayan Imports Link Library on the HI Forum Page. Then read the info on Sharking a DOTD.
