Hi BK400,
The knife is designed to use the finger choil. If you prefer to "not get that close", I would recommend a different design, such as the Delica, which does not incorporate the finger choil.

As Sal said, you have to use the choil to get all your fingers on the handle. I am not a big fan of choils and I prefer to have the something between me and the edge but the Caly III really doesn't bother me like some knives do.
I am fast becomming a big fan of the Caly III. I liked the Caly Jr but I was not gaga over it. This is by far the best small Calypso yet. In the medium sized folder catagory, the Caly III ranks very high on my list. I have had a lot of knives and this one is really good. It stands out as better than most.
You owe it to yourself to at least hold one before you decide. If I had a chance to hold one when they first came out, I would have bought one right away. Check one out, most people really like it. If you don't, that is fine but it is one of the better knives of it size on the market. It is not over priced either. I thought that until I got one. This is not just a Caly Jr in G-10, it is a whole new knife made better than the Jr.
