Hey guys

I'm making two identical knives for me and a friend. I have have came up with two designs for the knives. These designs are exactly the same except one has a five inch blade and the other one has a blade that is 115mm long. Me and my friend are primarily going to use this knife for busgcrafting, craving, cutting food, camping and other field uses. I have used multiple 4 inch knives and they have great control. I have never used a 5 inch blade before and was wondering is there any advantage to making a longer blade?

I´m going to longer blades nowdays.
I like tiny blade knives but when I need to chop something I miss bigger blades.
For me 5" is ideal for only one tool in the bush you can batton and chop better than with a shorter blade and do samethings that you are able to do with 4".
It´s a chimera to have a short blade knife with the capacities of a big blade knife, sure you can learn some techniques to do the job done but is easier safer and less calories wasted with the rigth tool

for pure bushcraft I prefer 4. If its 5 inches has to be thin, not thick like a BK-2

Most bushcraft or survival sites will tell you that if carrying just one knife in the woods that a knife between 4 and 6 inches is best for "most" of the things you'll need to do . So I think I would suggest the 5 inch knife that would put you right in the middle . Also a longer blade (if sturdy) is better for battoning .

HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS !

I think I may have a different idea of what chopping is because I've not found a knife yet under 8 inch blade length that can chop worth a darn. To the OP;The difference between a 5 inch knife and a 4 inch is one of preference. Neither will out do the other at anything so pick whichever one looks better to you.

OP did not list chopping as a requirement. I think 5" is a great all-around utility blade length. It is nice to also have a short folder for detail work like splinter removal, etc.

Personally I like a 5 inch blade, I don't really see any lost of fine cutting ability vs. a 4 inch blade.

10.

oh we are talking about knives?
My theory is guys always prefer knives with blades the same size as their penis. Unless they are compensating. My favorite knife is my scrapyard SOD. As for the original question, 5, just in case.

What about something like the recon scout?
No idea as I've never tried that one. I would say that compared to a GB mini, about the same weight, it would also not do so great but that's a guess.

My favorite blade is 2 1/2 inch, which is shorter. What is one compensating for when one goes in the other direction? ;)

I should have mentioned this before, the blade design can be described as a Fallkniven F1 or a Bark rivers gameskeeper 2 without the choil. Also it is worth mentioning that while the title of this post says four inches or five, the four inch blade is actually 110mm long so that's approximately 4.5 inches long. Also keep in mind that the blade is 28mm (1.1 inches) wide at the widest part of the blade.

I prefer a 4 inch knife. Five feel s too big for fine work and too small for heavy work (to me, at least).

for me its .25" ... oh we are talking about blades meh if your going to baton or chop i like something like the rtac 2 for whittling i vary from 2.5-5.2 in but generally the blade i like for whittling is smaller than 4 in sorta rat 3 size for edc very small like sog twitch II size is actually about right for kitchen i use kitchen knives and if not something that in folding is more than 4in in fixed more than 4.5 and it works out

i would say do a 5 and see if you like it me i like knives and have more than one option but for chopping wood or batoning i like something big like 9 in or bigger preferabbly 10 or bigger

Well, How big a fellars are ya, (no Jokes, been enough of those) I see a lot of bushcraft knives the are 8 to 8 1/2 inches and they looks nice, but i am a big ole boy. 6'8" or so. I would like a bushcraft knife over all about 10 inches. My hand is over 4 inches wide. If I grab a ruler like a knife it is almost measures 5 inches wide. Maybe you should make what is comfortable to you and your friend.

@ Omniviking Me and my friend are very similar. We are the same height, weight and hand size. You're 6'8" tall!!! You almost a foot taller than me!

Also I think it is worth mentioning that I am definately not going to use this knife for chopping or battoning. There is a reason why I carry a 18 inch machete and a hachet when I go bush :D
