Four pound Kelly double bits are somewhat rare. I never seen a 4 lb. Kelly double bit before. Kelly 3.5 Lb double bits are quite common. These are from ebay. After they didn't sell for the asking price, I contacted the seller and negotiated a buy it now price for both of them. They were very reasonable. I don't think he knew what he had.

Both are on 36" handles and are tight to the head.

The U.S.A. stamp indicates that this Kelly was made four military issue. It makes this one very rare.

A comparison to a Kelly Perfect 3.5 Lb. double bit.

Thanks for looking, Tom

Very nice, Tom. Those are lookers!!! Good job snapping those up!

If you don't mind, I'll throw in the only four pound kelly I have (going from memory anyway). My grandpa gave me this head.

Hey Matt, I'm looking at your Kellys. The bottom picture, the one on the right, a Perfect is stamped 32 for a 3.5 head wt. The one on the right looks like it has a wt. stamp on it but I can't read it in your picture. It appears smaller than the Perfect 3.5 head.

Is it your 4 lb. head? The Perfect with the Pat No. on it is SWEEEET!!! Do you know how old it is?

Thanks, Tom

Yes, Sir. This will help. "4" stamp.

It does have less bit length, but the bits are wider and the whole head is thicker over all.

I don't know. I tried to narrow it down once upon a time, but I forgot what I found out! If I remember correctly, I couldn't narrow it down much at all.

ETA: To be fair, the head is probably not a full 4 pounds anymore!

Thanks for the help. Like I said, that Perfect is really a sweet one. Not only a 4 Lb double bit, but a Perfect 4 lb'er. That is the only other Kelly 4 lb. double bit that I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing it.

Tom

So I was able to round up some 4 lbers - I am noticing a connection to what Double Ott is saying here - Flint Edge seems to be prevalent....hmmmm....

Oddly enough, these Kellys are the only 4 lb DBs I have. Everything else is 3 1/2 lb or below.

Interesting. Thanks for bringing up this point Double Trouble!

I guess I should refine my comment about 4 Lb double bits. It's the Michigan, pattern 4 Lb. Kellys that I've never seen before. Now it appears that a few of you collectors have them. I do have a swamping pattern Kelly Works Flint edge double bit that is stamped 4 Lbs. Those are somewhat common.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I'm always learning. Who says that an old dog can't learn a new trick?

Regards, Tom

Tom - yeah the "regular" double bits in 4 lbs are not too common, something I never really thought about before your post. The only one I have is that smaller flint edge who is a little fatty. The others of mine don't really count because they are different patterns. But it is an interesting topic and one to think about - why the drop off at the 4 lb mark and the scarcity compared to 3 1/2 lbers. Good topic!

I just checked my double. It is a True Temper Flint Edge Kelly Works axe with a 4 stamped on it. The cheeks are smooth. Never paid any attention to it.
