I've all-the-sudden gotten anal about this seiko 5...

Ok, is it possible to get a domed sapphire crystal installed on this thing? and if so, can I do it? Or can someone direct me to someone who can?

two, i hear a lot of issues about springbars breaking. it seems like they are kind of a weak idea in the first place, IMO. Are there any substitutions to this method of attachment? I was thinking, if hole were drilled completely through the case, you could slide in like a solid bar, which I feel like would hold pretty well.

tritium is illegal in the US, right? Is it possible at all for one to get their numbers painted with the stuff?

four, my watchband is getting lame. I wear a kind of cheap NATO band, and it's getting worn out. I keep having to burn the fuzzies that arise, and then it scratches my wrist. the holes for the buckle are getting all worn down and I keep having to burn those too. can anyone recommend a good band, preferably NATO style, that will fit 18-19mm?

Thanks guys.

I talked to the guy at westcoasttime.

Rhino straps only come in 20 and 22mm. The other NATO straps he had kind of look like the one i already use...

Tritium is not illegel in the US if used in a tool and a watch is concidered a tool.

Funny, I thought Luminox used Tritium in thier watches! Anyway, how about contacting Bill Yao at Mark II He might be able to help you. If all else fails, sideline your Seiko and pick up something that suits your needs.

BTW, I've never broken a springbar on any of my hard use watches. Drilling a larger hole seems like a quick way to really screw up a watch. I'd leave stuff like that up to the pro's who are insured for thier screwups.

1) Domed sapphire --- not really worth it to retrofit a Seiko 5. The watch isn't that expensive. Having a domed sapphire crystal cut, then mounted on your Seiko 5 will cost several times more than the watch would be worth. Just buy a watch with a sapphire crystal.

2) Springbars: They make heavy duty springbars. I buy all stainless beefy springbars from Frei and Borel. Not worth putting solid bars on your Seiko. Have you actually had yours break? I haven't yet had a Seiko 5 springbar break on me. Most of my watches are secured by springbars-- I have a Panerai that weighs about the same as four Seiko 5's put together. It is secured by springbars. I think you are worried about something that is not a problem in the first place.

3) Tritium is legal. Having quanitities on hand requires a license from the NRC. No one wants to handle radioactive substances any more. Especially since 9-11, anyone wanting to keep radioactive materials in their shop brings a lot of federal scrutiny upon themselves. Not worth the bother really when Luminova is non-toxic and easy to apply.

4) Tired of nylon bands crapping out? Why not try a nice leather or Kevlar style band. There are so many to choose from.

I have seen a Seiko with steel rods installed in place of the spring bars.I works well, unless you really look you can't tell.Just get someone to do it that knows what they are doing. The mans that I saw had a small hole drilled in one side of the lugs and a steel bar taped in through to the other lug and cut off flush.
