I just purchased a Fox Karambit 599XT and the trainer, 599XTTK. Both are so stiff that even they are partially open, I cannot lock in with a wrist flick. One of them I can't even depress the blade release button on the spine (they are back-lock design) with knife thumb. I read that they need to be "break-in". What exact is break-in? Do I need to work the blade in and out for weeks or do I need to oil it? It is annoying after spending $300 and got two knives that don't work as advertised.

Break in period means opening and closing the knife a good number of times, the backspring will loosen up some more, the lock will wear in a bit more along the edges of the lockface. Losening the pivot screw might help a bit if it was too tight from the factory.
BE CAREFUL if you decide to disassemble the knife for cleaning/lubrication, the 599XT apparently runs on IKBS, which means a ton of little metal balls that you might lose, and it's tricky to assemble if you're not familiar with it. Personally what I would do:
1. Open and Close for the duration of a movie or two
2. Loosen up the pivot screw just a little bit
3. Blow out the pivot without disassembling , blow in some oil
4. Work the knife the same amount of time again

It should make a noticeable difference.

Thank you. I have been doing the open and closing thing for a few hours and placed a couple of drops of oil at the pivot point without much improvement. I will continue for a few more days to see if it will loosen up.

One more thing you can try with a backlock is open the knife half way OR all the way and wrap a zip tie around the lock, that way you have constant pressure on the spring, leave it over night or a full day, it can help loosen spring tension a bit.

Your experience doesn't sound right. In the review I watched, the blade flies open, which is basically the point of the bearing pivot.

Perhaps the pivot was overly tightened, or some Locktite spilled into the pivot area.

I'd call the dealer and have it exchanged for one that opens properly.

For that $$$$ it should work perfect out of the box . If it doesn't work-in PDQ , I'd return it !

That was one of the reasons I purchased the XT model due to its IKBS system. So far I am very disappointed.
