Got a FF (from the latest run) in the mail today to be convexed and decided to take some pics, comparing it with the first prototype. I also beat the heck out of it to test it...but don't tell the owner....:o :D

Prototype: around 2 lbs and 17.5" long

Latest run:

24 oz exactly and 17.25" long

(sorry for the slightly parallax in the pics - but trust me, the butt is lined up with the ruler)

from the top:

This was surprising - quite a bit longer. Felt great in my hand. Both feel pretty good, but the top one was much nicer.

Another interesting note is that the spine is about the same thickness as the heavier prototype. This makes me very happy. :D I'll try to get a pic of the taper in the spine along the blade later. That's where the difference in weight has been made up. That, and the longer handle (which means a shorter blade). Clever kami trick.....;)

I'd like to see the bolster like the first prototype, though - metal, and traditional size. (non-habaki)

Here they are side-by-side:

The blades are nearly the same width across the belly. The top one seems wider, because the blade is shorter - but they're about the same.

The only thing the prototype has on this latest run is the karda/chakma:

They're a little larger and easier to use.

Other than that - it passes the test for me! Looks great and I had no troubles or worries out chopping on wood this morning.

Thanks to Yangdu, the kamis, Yvsa and all those who have been waiting patiently for this run to get going.

Full Steam Ahead!!!

I agree with all of your points: handle, bolster, k & c.

Looking forward to mine.

Beautiful pix, Dan, and can't wait to see in person.

Man, that's a good lookin' khukuri. Lean, mean; clean.

Ad Astra

Hello Daniel

Beuatiful pictures indeed! I have a couple of questions about this exceptional knife:
1) Is the Foxy Folly still available or this was a limited run khukuri?
2) What is their cost?
3) Would you consider it as a heavy chopper?

Thank you,

George

Hi there, George:)

Take a look this link for a great review on the FF http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=359012

Satori is our in house khuk crasher. He does stuff with khuks that makes "collectors" shutter in fear;) I respect him because he does the same stuff with his khuks that I do with mine...except he's not lazy like me and takes pics/videos and writes up reviews for the rest of the class:) The FF is a limited run as of right now, IIRC. However, the kamis generally make what they want. This run turned out so nice that i don't doubt that we will see a few trickle in here and there for Yanddu's best buys. Just keep your ear to the ground.
Once again, welcome:)

Jake

It sounds like they've got the heat treat figured out on these. Excellent.

George - I wouldn't consider them heavy choppers as they're very light for their size. However, if mine is any indication they do chop extremely well and cause less fatigue than the heavier ones. It would be interesting to do a chop-off between a FF and a 20" AK.

I agree with Dan in that I'd prefer a larger karda. If this is a concern (and this applies to pretty much any khukuri) an inexpensive workaround is to replace the karda with a Frost Mora, an Opinel, or something similar. It will cost less than $10, will cut far better with less work, and will usually fit in the karda's pocket. Both my BGRS villager and my M43 (my two standard field khuks) have a Mora riding shotgun with them. My WWII villager and FF will be receiving one each shortly. :)

If you could only have one khukuri, you could do a lot worse than a FF. A lot worse.

This latest run of FFs gives me hope that it might make its way into a regular lineup. Yes, it's that good. Just hope we can solve the last remaining issues.

I did beat on this one pretty good. No bends or dings in the edge. I'm very impressed with the overall feel too.

The cost is $150. And since the prepaid folks have waited they longest (and subsequent blems have and will squeak through, resulting in price drops) - because of this, we're being kinda picky and we want it exactly right. Yangdu is probably going crazy with this and I know that she wants this to be done properly, but also as soon as possible. So, what am I saying? I think there will be more available. The easiest way to ensure that, is to send Yangdu an email and let her know that you're waiting for one. Prepay for it, if you're feeling gutsy. :D

Hey Dan,that khuk looks awfully familiar! :D

I only wish now that I had prepaid for two of these. The handling on this knife really has to be felt to be believed. The brass fittings and bolster really don't bother me,but I MUST have a steel fitted one also. It's fate I tell you!

I wanted to take the time and express my thankfulness to all who have welcome me and be eager to answer any question I may have posted.

I am as "green" to this forum as one can be, I mean this is my sixth post; I am still trying to buy a khukuri but haven't made it yet and when I am looking back at the way the members of this forum have embraced me I am amazed.

"ferguson", "Nasty" (who I think is anythink but that), "munk", "Svashtar", "Steely Gunz", "Satori", "Daniel Koster" you are all nice people and give this forum the quality that I am sure the late Uncle Bill would like to see. So are the rest of the people who consitute the core of this forum.

In a world where rudeness and lack of kindness is the trend, it's nice knowing that some people stick to old-time values such as fellowship and sense of community.

Greetings from Greece,

George

George?

Don't buy any indulgences from...er...someone on the forum.

Granted, they are only $19.95 U.S., but he makes a fortune on shipping.

Nice to have you here.

Welcome George!

stilgar - I didn't even notice the handle, fittings, etc. until I compared them side by side. I just picked it up and started messing around with it. Felt completely natural. I just love it when a khukuri is tough and looks great too. Why not, ya know? The YCS is that way. But now the Fox Folly comes in a hundred bucks cheaper and takes the cake. Hope we see lots more of these.
