Foxy Folly Consensus?

I have decided that I have to have a Foxy Folly but I wanted to get some feedback first.
Where does it excel?
Is it for heavy chopping?
Would it work for light stuff as well as say a Gelbu Special?
How would it be as a martial type blade compared to some of the others?
I think that Yvsa says that it's a great overall blade.
The blade is awful wide but I think that it is pretty light.
What would be it's strengths or weaknesses?
Which maker seems to be the best for this one?
Any info or comments that you have would be appreciated. I have several that I want and hope to have some Christmas money to do a little Khukuri shopping and have pretty much made up my mind that this is the one.

FF is 3 from the right just to the left is a 18 Siru. to the right a 15-16 BAS

Nope thinner blades, with deep fullers. These things are vampire slayers.

Going to war? This is the knife.

There's all the rest of the khukuris, then there's the FF.

You'd be lucky to get one. I'd like another.

Will shoot new photos in 2006 :foot:

If you can find one that weighs 25, 26, or 27 ounces instead of 24, I believe it will give you more all around use- and chopping.
AT 28 ounces it would have been a masterpeice.
Most people do not have the same wood cutting requirements as myself. I use my 24 ounce FF for a hiker.

Beautiful blade.

Cuch, I'm just prejudiced over the Foxy Folly because to me it is the epitome of what a khukuri should be in all aspects.;)
If the handle was curved like the old ones it would be absolutely perfect.
Point of balance on my 24 ounce model is about 3" or so in front of the bolster but doesn't feel forward heavy at all. It reminds me of some of the really old khukuris.

I just ordered the one from yesterday's Yangdu's Best Buys and that will make the third one for me. ;) :D

I handled one of the Super Light versions at BLADE. My hand went UP when I took it! I expected it to weigh so much more. The standard version should feel almost perfect for a fighter and light to medium chore kuk.

. . . and it doubles as a canoe paddle! ;)

I have a neem handled FF and love it. It is a fooler; the wide blade screams "heavy" at your brain, but it's MUCH lighter than it looks. Still heavy enough to get the job done, and the two fullers help in that respect, too.

It's interesting. The reviews have been mixed.

I've been extremely happy with both of mine and they both cut well. However, I handled one belonging to someone else who claimed that it didn't cut. They were right. The weights were the same, the lengths were similar...what could it be? I can see now why some weren't as pleased as others.

Additionally, most seemed to prefer the earlier curved, thin handles to the later short, thick handles. Both worked for me but I liked the thicker handles better.

When it works, it works well. When it doesn't, it's still not a bad design.

Ad Astra that picture has sealed it HIKV has truly kicked in....I expect you to either send me yours or paypal me the money for it ASAP...I'm waiting.....:grumpy:

Just kidding, unless of course you've already sent it/paypaled me, in which case I'll have to keep it--wouldn't want to be rude!;) :p :D

You know, I've been giving this some thought.
I wish it were where I could afford to pay the shipping both ways to study some of the Foxy Follys that aren't good cutters.
I strongly suspect that there is something with the edge geometry that's different.
With the weight, length, and point of balance all the same or very close to the same there is nothing else to explain the differences.

Edge geometry plays a crucial part in how a khukuri cuts or doesn't I've found.
But then that's also true of hatchets and axes as well.
The hatchet that mom and the old man got me for Christmas one year was a good example.
No matter how sharp I sharpened the edge it just didn't penetrate or throw chips as it should have.
One day I got a brand new file and put the hatchet in a vise and went to work on it.
I thinned the edge considerably but kept the convex edge. After that the hatchet cut like a flying banshee and threw chips like there was no tomorrow!  :D

The opposite can also be true as well. If a blade is too thin behind the edge it may penetrate wonderfully but not throw chips decently at all.
There can be a really fine line between what works and what doesn't and it's not always apparent as to what exactly is wrong.:(

After I get the review done on the Ultimate Fighter I'll have the Bura made Foxy Folly and will be able to compare three of them to see what the differences are.
I'm reasonably sure there's going to be a considerable difference between the 24 ounce models and the 31 ounce prototype but that remains to be seen.;)

The more data we share here, the more experience we bring to the table, the more we know.
Yvsa has given me an idea.
I thought my own FF a rather 'desolutory' chopper- kinda so- so. I'm going to give it another look. It may be a slightly more aggressive angle would help. And it only takes a very very little metal off to make a substancial change.

This is probably true of all tools, (and People) but HI khuks will show you what they need and like best. I haven't spent enough time with my own FF to see what the potential is.

I still think a 26 ounce light model would have been optimum. But why shouldn't my 24 cut better? There's a lot of ways to skin a cat, isn't there? The whole point of the fullers was to lighten the load and maintain strength. Yeah, I know, all you knife folks think they're 'awesome' as well!

Sure thing, MauiRob.

I just wrapped it up with a couple other old knives in a Shotgun News and sent it to:

Maui, Hawaii

Merry Christmas!

You can thank me next year.

Blade geometry on all three I've owned has been different.

Of these two, the one one the left is better....

The two below my post side by side are both Foxy Follys, In Ad Astra's pic the bottom one with the black horn handle is a BDC - Bura Dui Chirra - 14" of heaven.... Though the one above is looks like an antler or bone BDC - there were, as I remember Norm saying, some in 12" so that horn one may be a smaller one (or else there is a larger BDC of which I am unaware...
