Foxy Folly scabbard repair

I got my Foxy back from Dan a couple of days ago. This is an impressive convex edge! I've learned to put a fairly serviceable convex edge on khuks, but nothing like this. However......

When I examined the scabbard today there was a split in it. The wood and leather were both split about 2" on the edge side of the scabbard.Needless to say,it DID NOT come back from Dan this way. I don't think that I cut it while sheathing the knife either. I'm fairly careful about that.

I wedged the split open slightly and spread Gorilla Glue into it. I glued the leather back down also. I then "clamped" it for a couple of hours using a 200rd. can of .308. Ammo is great to have around even wken you're not shooting it! Just for the sake of overkill, I spread more glue along the outside of the split.

The repair seems to be fairly strong. Is this a common occurence with scabbards? Also,is this going to be a weak spot to split again?

Do you guys think that I just get a custom scabbard made? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I think the scabbards splitting is just kind of the nature of the beast. What I would do, and please keep in mind i know very little about anything and even less about the rest;), is to either wrap the mouth of the scabbard with a decorative wire or a metal plate. Maybe some thin brass or polished sheet metal? It would be a heck of a lot cheaper than a custom rig. Me=cheap:)

This is a good idea, although I have to say that the polyurethane glue you used is the strongest stuff I have seen. I butt jointed two pieces of pine together with Gorilla glue, and put them in a vise to test the glue joint, and the wood literally tore in half before the joint broke.

It might not look the best now though, so the wire wrap is a nice touch. I think Steve Ferguson did this on one of his scabbards? Ot was it Satori? Can't remember, but it was a super nice job and added a lot to the look of the scabbard, not to mention the added strength.

I've only had one scabbard split and it was my original Foxy Folly.
The blade was literally too wide for the scabbard and you could just see and feel the edge sticking out of the side of the scabbard.
Since the Foxy Folly had a super wide blade I ground off about a 1/16" and then had Terry Sisco recover the original scabbard with a beautiful brown leather.
Terry also made a special frog for it that contains the two kardas I made for the Foxy Folly.
All around an excellent rig although a bit heavy for me right now.
When my heart is fixed and I get back to some degree of normalcy it won't be so heavy.:D
You can view my pix of my original Foxy Folly with its new scabbard and karda's HERE.:D ;)
