I just made a trade for a NIB first production run 790 (#702 of 1000) and im sitting here considering what i should do with it when it arrives.

i don't usually pick up knives just to lock them away in a safe, but i do understand how the collectors market works. should i take the chance and occasionally carry it, find a collector who would appreciate it, or just lock it up and forget about it? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Lee

Carry it.

The subrosa is a gorgeous knife and looks like a hell of an EDC.

Fish were made to swim, birds to fly and Benchmades to carry and cut.

Lee, FPR knives from Benchmade do not increase in value anymore than regular production runs do. The only exception would be if someone was collecting a specific number or only first production runs. The extra writing on the back of the blade is often seen as unsightly by many and inhibits its chances for increased value to many.

I agree. "First Production" means nothing to me, and I'd rather not have the writing there.

I would carry it. I had a Subrosa for a short time a while back and it carries thin and feels nice in the hand. It doesn't do any good being hidden away from the world :)

that makes sense fellas, thanks.

at least now i wont feel so bad when decide to drop it in my pocket once in awhile

Plus, I dont like all the writing on the side of the blades it takes away from the grinds.

I always wondered why they discontinued the Subrosa so soon. I assume lousy sales. But I liked it.

I think you are right, unfortunately the coolest blades get axed too quick. Benchmade has a stable of some of the best production knives ever made all discontinued.

I also like the Subrosa. Had one for a short time, then sold it because I had too many knives of that size. Plus I had just gotten a Sebenza. It is a sweet blade, and very thin in the pocket. A great framelock from BM. I'm actually drawn to quite a few of the BM discontinued knives. More than some of the current production models in the same class. But that's how it goes sometimes.

On Topic. If you got it as an EDC, then that's what it should be. I have a 635 mini skirmish and a Kulgera both discontinued that I enjoy using as well.

thanks for all the feedback guys, I guess im gonna wait to decide what I do with it. if I don't care for it I will probably trade it away until I do get something I know i'll like. it was one of those kinda deals that fall in a fellas lap and I honestly didn't even know what the 790 was until I used the search feature on here.:D

Yep. If anything I wouldnt want a first production run since they put that right in the middle of the blade which doesnt look very appealing. And the way I see it is if its a knife then use it, maybe be more careful not to scratch it or something but dont lock it up, that may hurt its feelings.

a quick update....the 790 arrived Friday, got a bath in soapy water, dried using my daughter's hair dryer, lubed up, and is currently riding in my back right pocket. ive never been an assisted open kinda guy (not a single one in my edc rotation until now), but the nitrous system is definitely interesting. also, I like how slim/light weight the knife is, but packs alotta blade in that package. locks up solid with no blade play and after I broke out the sharpie, that sticky lock is a thing of the past.
