Hi all,

I am in the middle of playing Quake4. It is quite cool, the graphics are crisp but the physics are kinda slow. It's 3d engine is a nightmare, made me buy a new GPU, my Ati 9550GE overclocked at 420Mhz was barely enough for 800x600 low quality. The newly purchased Nvidia 6600GT is largely enough for 1280x1024 high quality.
In case some gamers are reading this post, what FPS game would you recommend me after this one? Something with decent graphics and plot, other than Doom3 and HalfLife?

Call of Duty & United Offensive (COD's add-on disk) Once you are finished with that, get something called 'The German Front' (GFM) mod (Free download just Google it) and play online with one of the best 1PS Multiplayer games I have ever seen. It has realistic weapons damage, decent recoil, no sights on the screen, you have to use your iron sights.

If you find a decent enough server i.e. one that has older people and an admin that kicks for any rule breaking its a real winner.

Oh forgot to add I run a

XP2800+
ATI 9700 Pro
1 GIG PC3200

and it runs on 1600x1200 res :)

You need to play Call Of Duty 2. The graphics and game play are phenomenal.

I enjoy playing Doom WADs, but with moder-ish 3D engines and models - Doomsday, jDoom.

They are "old school" but very good gameplay. Free, too.

My favourite FPS of all time is Clive Barker's Undying (quite old game). It's not as advanced as the newer games and doesn't have multiplayer but the atmosphere is superb.....very scary. Creatures jump out at you from nowhere. It's my favourite game 'cos it combined fps with adventure.

It's not a FPS (I guess you would call it a 3rdPS) but I have been playing Mafia a lot lately. It's a couple of years old but I seen it at Wallmart for 4.95 and picked it up. I'd have to say it's one of my favorite games of all time. You're in a 30's organized crime family and get to do all sorts of missions from hits on politicians to stealing booze. It has the best story line of any game I have played. Kind of like a great mob movie but you're playing it instead of watching it.

I'm a big Battlefield 2 fan, and was previously a big Battlefield 1942 fan. It seems very restrictive now when I go into an FPS and can't jump in any vehicle I see and drive around.

I only play computer games occationally, but FPSes are my favorites. Here are some that I've played and enjoyed. Most are older and/or not well known.

From Dusk Til Dawn Great graphics, scary action, and very fun!
Ever heard of System Shock 2? Interesting story, more 'careful' play that Doom-type games; you can't just blast everything in sight. Includes psycho monkeys!
The StarWars Dark Forces II is one of my all-time favorites.
Nocturne and Planet of the Apes are great, but aren't exactly first person. I believe you'd call them third-person.
How about all of the Tom Clancy games, Rainbow 6, etc. I find these to be very challenging, much more so than the fantasy-type games.

I bought a FPS the other day that looks interesting, but I haven't installed it yet. Iron Storm. "What if World War I never ended?"

If you see it for a couple bucks in the bargain bin, The Gunman Chronicles is OK. Has a couple of good spots, and won't take long to play through.

I love the Delta Force games, but haven't played the new Black Hawk Down yet.

Redline is an interesting first-person game with decent graphics and an interesting story. You're fighting futuristic gangs with cool cars and on foot.

I just finished playing No One Lives Forever. It was definitely worth the 50 cents I paid at a garage sale. Some parts are pretty good, other areas of the game are definitely lacking.

Best Wishes,
Bob

Thank you guys. I looks like I have quite a few nice games to try out :D

HALO
HALO 2
Both BROTHERS IN ARMS titles
Everything DOOM related
Call of cthulu
Riddick escape from buchers bay.

If you havent played Half Life2, do so ASAP. Other than that, Far Cry, Pain Killer, and Battlefield2 are the better ones out. Far Cry and Pain Killer are down two budget price now too. You might also try Counter-Strike Source and Day of Defeat. They are both multiplayer mods for Half-Life2.

Good choice on the 6600GT, I run the BFG model of that card. I have to send it for warranty work through...I think the processor may have fried. Kind of sucks because I had just purchased Quake4 when it happened, didnt even get to boot it up. Oh well, a few more weeks isnt going to hurt I guess.

My all time favorites are Half-life, far Cry, the first Max Payne and Half-life 2.

These are in no particular order, I like them all equally!!! :D

I'd recommend Far Cry. Otherwise I'd suggest some older games like Deus Ex or the original Half Life. I reckon Half Life is more fun to play today than Half Life 2.

I liked System Shock 2 for its atmosphere, but the monsters sometime respawn wildly which spoils it a bit. Undying is good too, very cinematic in places. For a real change of pace try Thief 2. I like games that are fairly open - that give you objectives but let you choose how to fulfill them.

I didn't like Max Payne. As I recall, it's 3rd person. I don't find 3rd person games as immersive as 1st person ones.

I just played through the original Half-life, picked up an old copy after finishing HL2 (I know, backwards....) Anyway, this was not the updated "source" version, but the original release.

It was fun, and I did find it harder in many ways than HL2. I believe I died more, but mostly due to the rather clunky controls. I was forever falling off things....

HL2 is just superb, IMO. Graphics, voice acting, immersiveness, scariness ( "We don't go to Ravenholm any more". Good thing, too!) Just flat fun. I'm playing through it again, waiting for the "Aftermath" sequel to come out.

Counter Strike Is still the best! Day of Defeat if you like WWII games...both are mods for half life...Also Battlefield 2 is a lot of fun. You can get away with an older processor if you upgrade the vid card and RAM.
