Not to long ago I acquired a Becker Patrol Pack. I really like this pack, but I wanted a frame in it. They used to make them, but they are hard to come by these days. So I decided to make my own.

I started with some 1" x 1/8" aluminum bar stock. The pack had a pad in it so I used it for the dimensions.

The knife if for a size reference.I used copper rivets to attach the pieces.

The pad was then attached to the frame with rivets and washers.

The frame slides in the slot where the pad was.

This really gives the pack more stability for loading. I also makes carrying moderate loads much easier.

This is a easy project. I think it will work with most packs that have a sleeve for a hydration bladder.

Oooooooooooooo.................

I like that pack, seems the frame would be a great addition, and the aluminum is light, and the rivets won't corrode that fast.

Excellent job, brother.

Love the ideal. Do you have a way to cut the metal. If so, you could drop some weight, and still retain the ridgedness, by cutting out holes in the sheets. Skeletonizing it, for a lack of a better description.

I've been thinking about removing the back sleeve and adding a rigid MOLLE panel to mine. Dual duty as a frame sheet and internal organizer

I am not really to worried about weight, but that is not a bad idea.

I would like ti see that in action. Sounds cool.
Brilliant man. That's some nice work!

very cool. that looks like a great pack. use it well
Thanks boys.
good idea...

maybe tubing?
Tubing would be cool, especially if it were welded.

Tubing makes me think of trying it with bamboo. Not sure how I would hold it together. Something to think about though.

I wonder how a sheet of kydex with the pad attached would work ??? I have two Beckers and REALLY want a frame in them but as you note the originals are very hard to come by now... :(

I love my patrol pack. Apparently my 4 yr old daughter does too. I was on the computer and she just came out like this.

Well I just went ahead and made the frame with kydex and foam, the contact cement is still drying so some pic of the finished product later ... :D I have two so if the first one works OK I will do a second... :D

That's a great idea. I can't stand carrying a heavy pack without a frame.

Is there still room in the sleeve for a hydration bladder with the frame in place?

I use a cut down grill rack that fits inside a sleeve my wife made for it. I like having a grill in camp :D

Come on down to Barlow Murph, you'll get neckromanced with that purty mouth.
