Hi friends,
I rarely order knives these days, as this itch gets scratched fairly regularly.
That said, I DO keep my eyes open for the unusual, or the stylish. My collection is diverse, but I've found I have a fond propensity for ivory Micarta scales with a red liner on my folder selections. This next one brings my total up to about seven.
Frank posted one of his 'Commander' flippers in Spring of 2010. I liked it enough to contact him and see if he's build one with my favorite materials. Yes, he would. It came in close to schedule and he kept me appraised of the progress or delays all the time. That's important.
Let's see it:
As you can see this is clean. REAL CLEAN. There is a gentle stippling on the bolsters, but with polished sides. The micarta is polished, the red liners give it a taste of color seasoning, and the inner liners have jeweling throughout the well.
The whole shape is deceptively simple, and the backspacer/standoffs are consciously left plain.
I am a believer that a custom knife's clip, when equipped, is an area that HAS to show it's handmade. To this point, Frank has positioned his work above and beyond. It's a carved slender arm with a sweet increase in size at it's grip. The attachment area fits into a milled pocket in the bolster. He used this area to sign his work. Beautiful.
The flipper arm has traction grooves, and the upper blade spine has this as well. The action is impeccable--immediately snapping open, then the lock engagement and disengagement, and then the closing fitment into the well. Perfecto.
The knife is better than I imagined.
Frank Fischer is the son of maker Todd Fischer, both who reside in Florida. Frank's OTHER mentor is Stan Wilson, one of our favorite makers and who's meticulous builds are legendary.
As I always do, I offer an appraisal of any new entry into my collection. This one's a keeper.
