Hi friends,

I rarely order knives these days, as this itch gets scratched fairly regularly. ;)

That said, I DO keep my eyes open for the unusual, or the stylish. My collection is diverse, but I've found I have a fond propensity for ivory Micarta scales with a red liner on my folder selections. This next one brings my total up to about seven.

Frank posted one of his 'Commander' flippers in Spring of 2010. I liked it enough to contact him and see if he's build one with my favorite materials. Yes, he would. It came in close to schedule and he kept me appraised of the progress or delays all the time. That's important.

Let's see it:

As you can see this is clean. REAL CLEAN. There is a gentle stippling on the bolsters, but with polished sides. The micarta is polished, the red liners give it a taste of color seasoning, and the inner liners have jeweling throughout the well.

The whole shape is deceptively simple, and the backspacer/standoffs are consciously left plain.

I am a believer that a custom knife's clip, when equipped, is an area that HAS to show it's handmade. To this point, Frank has positioned his work above and beyond. It's a carved slender arm with a sweet increase in size at it's grip. The attachment area fits into a milled pocket in the bolster. He used this area to sign his work. Beautiful.

The flipper arm has traction grooves, and the upper blade spine has this as well. The action is impeccable--immediately snapping open, then the lock engagement and disengagement, and then the closing fitment into the well. Perfecto.

The knife is better than I imagined.

Frank Fischer is the son of maker Todd Fischer, both who reside in Florida. Frank's OTHER mentor is Stan Wilson, one of our favorite makers and who's meticulous builds are legendary.

As I always do, I offer an appraisal of any new entry into my collection. This one's a keeper.

Great job on that folder, Frank, and great pictures....as always....Coop.

Congrats on another piece for the ol' collection. :)

Very nice score, Coop. Todd and Frank do really superb work. A number of us are going to gather at the Fischer estate in a couple of weeks for a hammer-in. I went last year and it was a lot of fun. The Fischers have a lot of cool toys including a milling setup that is bigger than my first car and probably cost more than my current one. And if that isn't enough for you, Stan lives right next door and he has a bunch more.:D The main activity for these weekends is a knife build. The more competent members of the group do a damascus knife from forging to finish over the course of the two days. The rest of us just hang out and ruin perfectly good steel with Todd's Big Blu hammer.;)

Excellent works!
Congratulations to both: Jim - with another fine collection of completion, and Frank - with stunning photos!
And a knife and photos of each other are - great job!

I too am a longtime fan of Frank's and Todd's knives. I want to show you the knife from my collection of Frank -

This is a great Commander - XL, with Carbon fiber Scales and with a very nice double finish blade - S30V blade stone wash finish with surface ground flats.

P.S. Jim, I hope you do not mind that I took upon myself to put my photos in your topic.

Hi Joe!
We are with you turns out to be fellow countrymen? Both live in St. Petersburg? :D

Uber clean and very attractive as well as functional. I love that clip and the detail that went into it's design. Simple and beautiful!

WOW!! Congrats Coop! That is an AWESOME flipper to say the VERY least!

I met Stan Wilson and had the pleasure of handling some of his knives for the first time at Blade a few years ago.

If Frank Fischer's knives are as smooth as Stan's that IS impressive!

I can imagine it WOULD be quite the treat to go to the Fischer's shop and venture next door to Stan Wilson's in one trip!

Andrey,

I LOVE your photos, and with subjects as nice as these--who wouldn't!

Folks,

Thanks for the positive comebacks. I'm enjoying this folder, and it's reception is working to Frank's benefit. I have had (2) personal emails asking for Frank's contact info because of this exposure. HYCKPDNC--IP! ;)

I've just ordered another ivory micarta/red liner folder from a maker and another is already on order from DH3. Ooops, showing my cards! ;)

This is fun. :)

That is an extremely sweet folder, Coop. I'm generally not one for pocket clips, but I quite like the execution of this one, and the fact that he used it for his mark. Congrats!

I love that knife! Like you, I am a great fan of ivory micarta, and red liners make it even better :). Congrats.

Wow Coop, that knife is SO you! It has nice curves, your colors and the kind of bolsters you seem to like. I sometimes see knives at shows that make me think of you and this one would have done the same.

Nice knife btw!

andrix12345: My original post has his website and pricing schedule.

Thanks again, guys!

Stan is hardcore. The best way I could describe his place is that it is a multi room knife shop with sleeping quarters, a kitchen and a bathroom attached to it.;) What is really cool is the way he has modified a fair bit of his tools and machinery to suit his purposes. The Fischers actually have a house and a shop, but hey keep adding to the shop, so I thin that it is bigger than the house now. Lots of cool toys on those two adjoining pices of land.:D
