Back in June I was looking for a larger 2-bladed folder that would be easier to open than my small EDC slipjoint. While undergoing chemo therapy, the skin on my hands had peeled and my fingernails had become brittle and split making it very difficult to open the blades on my small slipjoint. I'm happy to say that Frank Niro said he could build me a folder that should meet my needs... double thumbstuds/double linerlocks. Delivery came on October 12th!

The knife specifications:

Length closed .... 4 ¾”
Length open ...... 8 ¼” and 8 ½”
Blade length ...... 3 ½”
Blade width ........ .093
Blade steel ........ 154CM (satin finished)
Blade types ........ Clip Point & Wharncliffe
Liners ................ .050 thick 6AL4V titanium file worked anodized
Back spacers ....... 6AL4V titanium file worked and anodized
Bolsters .............. 416 stainless
Bolster screws ..... 2 X 56 24 carat gold plated
Scale screws ........ 2 X 56 24 carat gold plated
Scales ................ mammoth ivory with blue colouring
Thumb studs ....... 6AL4V titanium file worked, anodized and with a red ruby inset

Frank doesn't usually give names to his creations but he calls this one "Double Lightning" so I figured it needed a special background...

Hoping my pictures did justice to Frank's creation. I thank you for looking and I'm sure Mr. Niro does too.

BEAUTIFUL knife. Congratulations and hope you are cancer free and able to enjoy it for MANY years!

Very nice piece. My personal preference tends to run toward single blade designs - particularly in a larger folder - but there is no doubt that this one is beautifully done. As an EDC that sure is as nice a piece as many could hope to own. I'd be taking it out constantly just to admire the ivory. Congrats!

Frank does great work. I've seen a couple other double liner lock knives and they look like they are a mile wide. Frank still has the slimness, just like his single blade liner locks. Plus Frank is a great guy, he's been helping me on the phone and email.

Frank is a heck of a craftsman and truly enjoys making folders! My communications with Frank were by e-mails and some pm's. I would love to 'chat' with Frank on the phone but because of a hearing impairment, I can't hear conversation.
And yes jonathan... the folder opens very smoothly, locks up tight with no 'wiggle'. ;) I am a very happy camper! :D

ps... I'm done with cancer treatments, my hair is starting to grow back (but it seems to be a bit more grey ) and I'll be taking some more pills for the next 5 years. Thanks for the 'well wishes', peterinct.

Excellent looking knife!

Would like to see closer tolerance reliefs for the lock release and thumbstud housing(just enough of a hole on the outside to house the thumbstud, and a relief cut on the INSIDE of the bolsters using a dovetail mill cutter).

Other than that, this think is just about perfect, and I would like one.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I did promise Gary I would answer technical sort of questions. Perhaps you missed the fact that this knife was custom made for Gary because of his finger problems. I would be pleased to help you with a folder in the style I make. If you wish to see more of my work, you can go to the customknifegallery.com and scroll down on the left hand side to see some of my work. My email is niro@telus.net. I do not have a web site and have barely started to use a camera. Frank

I've got to say, Frank... my fingers sure aren't hurting trying to open, hold, or close this one. Thank you again for helping me out!

Just wanted you to know, Frank... that Warncliffe blade just sliced up
some heavy duty plastic packaging on a new camera and accessories!
And my fingers have never felt better! :D
