FRCP Manix 2 price?

I thought the FRCP Manix 2 was designed to be cheaper to produce than the G10 Manix 2. So, why is the street price of the FRCP Manix 2 basically the same as the inflation-adjusted price of the 154CM G10 Manix 2?

I know that the current price of the current production G10 Manix 2 is based on their blade steel being S30V. That is not relevant to the question I am asking here.

Te prices on knives are usually whatever the buyers are willing to pay. Prices can fluctuate depanding on availability, popularity, etc. no real reason I would suspect.

I was just hoping, based on the promotional material, that this would be a knife which would be significantly easier on the wallet than the G10 Manix 2. And well, now it is, but only because the G10 Manix 2 got a steel upgrade which significantly upped the cost.

I just went onto the website of that big jungle down south and the FRCP model is $20 less then the G10 Manix. Quite a price difference but still in line with other models such as the Endura.

Ps. The steel upgrade costs does not cost the end user anything because there is no additional manufacturing cost.

We’re able to offer the S30V blade steel at no additional manufacturing costs. We have perfected our processes with S30V to the point where we can make the switch. Though there is a raw material increase from S30V to 154CM, our processing costs differ. Win/Win for everyone

Okay... Then why did the price of the G10 Manix 2 jump $25 at the same time as the steel upgrade happened? If the substance of what you say is true, the knives aren't costing the dealers any more than before, and they just think we'll pay an extra $20 or $25 for S30V. If so, then apparently they're right on average, because the price hasn't dropped since it went up.

Factor in the Para2 lack of availability, and everyone deciding to get a Manix 2 instead.

Do you have proof of this jump?

I ask because I just checked the price currently on the jungle place and there is a $10 increase since I bought mine last year and that is even with South Africa exchange rate suffering to the US Dollar and inflation.

I would argue that the Manix2 Lightweight is a completely different knife. One is on the heavier side and the other is one of the lightest knives for its size. That weight difference changes the intended use and therefore the intended buyer. The Lightweight is a knife I'll take backpacking. The G-10 version is a tough utility knife or an urban tank.

I do, but I cannot post direct links to the evidence here because of this forum's deal-spotting rules.

Suffice to say, I used the Wayback Machine to find a price of $72.56 with free shipping from January 7 2012 at a site where the current price is $91.85 with $4.52 shipping.

Yes, but Spyderco specifically said they would be cheaper to produce. Spyderco made the comparison themselves, so I feel comparing the two is valid.

And yes, I own a Manix 2 FRCP, and I feel that it is worth it. The problem is, I'd like to be able to convince some friends of mine that it is worth buying, which would be much easier if its price tag was more like the Native's... used to be. Crap, the Native is up $17 from when I bought mine, too.

It's getting really hard to lure new friends into the knife world, people.

One would have to come to the conclusion that demand has raised the price. The sage line has increased quite a bit price wise if memory serves me correctly.

I checked one of my dealers, $82 for the G10, $69 for the FRCP. I recall the price difference being the same even before the rolling change to S30v. It also depends where you go. The idea that the FRCP version in BD1 is priced too closely to the standard Manix and even the S30v Native FRN isn't new, I've read comments about it since the LWT came out.

I love the FRCP Manix. The ergonomics, weight, etc. are amazing. For the price, though, I'd like to see CPM-154, S30V, etc. Preferaby CPM-154, as I think that of currently available knife steels it offers close to the best balance of properties, and is easy on tooling during manufacturing. Also, there just aren't enough knives in CPM-154.

(Note, CPM-154 is not the same as 154CM.)
