I recently bought a Fred Carter FC4 marketed by United Cutlery. Although I am not impressed with other United knives I felt and still feel that the FC4 is a good knife. What are some other opinions regarding this or any of the Carter knives sold by United?

I have a Gigand Spectrum, designed by Fred Carter on the way in a day or two. I am guessing from what I read Gigand was owned by United Cutlery, that or they took over his designs. I am sure someone will know more about the whole deal.

I'm not sure of the exact date, but Gigand did go under about a year ago. Its really a shame as they were some well made knives, at least initially

I own a Gigand Titan which I've found to be a serviceable knife for the price. It's essentially a United Fred Carter FC5, although the blade steel is AUS-8 instead of 440 (440A?). When I bought it for about $35, it sold for about $20 less than the United version.

Since I liked my Titan so much -- with the exception of the pocket clip which makes the knife ride very high in the pocket -- I did a little research on the Gigand line. From what I recall, United initially produced the Fred Carter knives, but Gigand later bought the rights and tooling to continue producing them. I think I found that info here at Bladeforums. It seems that United is still selling the Fred Carter designed Harley Davidson knives though.

I'm not sure if Gigand really has gone under since their website is up and running, as opposed to it being down for a very long time between six months and a year ago. The only place on the web that I've found Gigand products is Blowoutknives.net (whose site is essentially down since only the homepage will load) and Knifecenter.com. Maybe the folks at 1SKS could look into retailing the Gigand line?

I hope this helps.

I have a Fred Carter FC2 and I think that it is a solid folder. My only complaint would be the blade steel, I would like to see something better than 440 but other than that it is a great folder.

I just had a nice e-mail from Paul Wu of Gigand. He sent me the lock lug for my Titan. FREE. They are in business and the product is better than ever. Customer service is fast and right on the money.
