I bought a used fixed blade hunting knife and this is what is stamped on the tang; "Fred Mac Overland" "Solingen Germany" The blade is etched with two indians riding horses and chasing three buffalo. The handle appears to be stag. The Blade is 6". Does anybody have any information on this knife and/or maker?

Overland sold a lot of knives, but he wasn't a maker or manufacturer. For a short time in 1952-53 he imported lots and lots of knives from Germany with his name on them. Mostly ones like yours and fishing knives/pliers.

Mr. Overland is, I think, still active in the knife world, writing, do articles in knife magazines.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like one fo the "in-expensive" German jobbing knives (?). Companies in solingen, just like here, make knives for other companies and people who make contracts to have their product made. This was very popular before WWI (late 1800's) and after WWII. Germany did much of this after WWII. They were recovering from the war and had many contracts for US companies. Unfortunately many of these knives had inferior quality stainless blades and few of them were made to really work hard, but were more for "show". Not having seen yours I cannot say, but it does sound like one of these knives.
