Boker Germany is advertising a balisong-like folding knife as a new Fred Perrin creation.

However, the knife is cool, just those knives were already produced in Czech Rep. many years before, I had a same one, just without the clip when I was 12. Nowadays a Czech company KDS is still making them /Fred`s one is in the same size even/ Second company who makes it is MEDIN from Czech Rep.

Russian NOKS makes already two other versions, which can be used as impact/control device when closed. They are a tad bigger.

I would be happy if anybody could shoot us the background of this story

AFAIK, F.Perrin apart from his Spyderco collaborations and his customs has a small production brand sold under his name (that is probably actually made by some French contractor -probably in Thiers).
I think this knife is from this production (although he makes himself some very inexpensive custom series on occasions too).

His production is very ecletic and always tests new ideas so I guess it would be hard to determine were the idea actually comes from.

Edit: oops sorry, not the design I was thinking of.

One person at Messerforum got his one . He was not pleased about it and will send it back to Boker. I thought these were available off march. Are these outplaced to another firm by Boker??

To me it seems more like a gadget then a proper edc-able
one. Allthough constructionwize it is very interesting.

This aien't Boker. Boker also sells other brands on their website such as CRKT, Fallkniven, Spyderco or... Fred Perrin knives...

They are just seller and/or official distributor for Germany/Europe...

Just like they seem to be official distributor for Opinel in the US (which explains why they are sometimes marketed as "Böker Opinel") http://www.agrussell.com/knives/by_maker/a_through_d/boker/bker_opinel_model_op8__1.html

Rav is correct, these are not Boker production, Boker Germany handles
distribution for them in Germany.

Freds designs are incredible, as well as being based on real world ideas, to address certain issues.
Of course, anyone who knows me, knows my thoughts on Fred and his work...:D
Thanks, Terry

Maybe to clarify, my post was not ment at all to blame anyone!

I am simply curious if this particular knife has a background story.

Thanks for the info Terry:thumbup:

I like Fred Perrin style knives a lot. I was a bit confused about it's origin. If this one has Fred's name tied to it the firm manufacturing it should do there best on it's execution. We would not like to see Fred's name get negative response..

:(

Maybe the one complaining got a lemon i guess.

Neat little blade, came in a leather etui. Single bevel grind, very dull edge especially comparing to Bökers (all mine came shaving sharp), even duller than a Opinel or SAK. Gonna re-bevel it this weekend with the Sharpmaker. The tip is VERY VERY blunt. The blade is placed at 45 degrees in relation to the square handle. The benefit is minimize the chance of cutting your fingers while unfolding the blade. The pivots aren't super duper smooth, even after oiling. It's possible to open and close it with one hand, but not as easy as a Balisong ;) Detail of finish is acceptable for the price. The ergonomics surpass the Emerson :jerkit:

I'm gonna keep this in my pocket next to the coins, as a "gentleman's knife". Its appearance (to the sheeple) is not intimidating, perhaps even cute:eek:

you're welcome Bro.

Tried to back bevel it with the Sharpmaker, but the blade is too thick, about .125". It's hopeless, so I decided to keep it SAK sharp, just to prevent cutting myself as this blade can be quite tricky to open. Showed it to a feminent girl, and she kinda thinks it's "all right"

Thanks for the info Man of Iron;

I already guessed the blade to be kind of obtuse and SAK wize. For reprofiling i use DMT coarse diamond stones. I can highly recommand them. Do you know the bladesteel used on this little bugger???

Keep us posted on this 'oddity'.

Thanks Maarten, after closer inspection I´ve decided not to reprofile the blade, for it´s too thick and too narrow for it´s own size. If I reprofile it to 35 degrees, it would look like a scalper, which isn´t very handy for the purposes I intend to use it. The steel is 440C, mentioned on the Messerforum link posted above, haven´t do any test on the steel, but my guts are telling me it´s about 56/57 RC.

The guys at the weaponstore where I ordered this were quite suprised about this `oddity´. Then they told me the other stuff (2008 Magnum, Direkt and KeyCom)I ordered from Böker were on "back order", lmao, cause it´s pre order. Then I looked at the Böker AK47, Böker Plus AK74, an Applegate dagger, a Böker ceramic folder and some Böker other stuff I can realy recall at this moment. Hate to say it, but the KAL (regular) was quite dispointing... Both finish and ergonomics, and not to mention the tip...http://www.emersonknives.com/MyViewThousand.html

Man of Iron
Just put a 40 degree included microbevel on the Quattro. Should be easy on 440c with the sharpmaker.

I always am a bit weary on these bladetests. Knives are supposed to be cutting tools and not prybars.

The Kalasnikov you are referring to is not my cup of tea. I handled one and it just was not for me.

Guess you have to wait for your backorders on the Direkt /Keycoms . Earliest half may i heard.
