I did enjoy my first visit to the SHOT show and I learned a lot. I can see people have been filling you in on some of the exciting new products that were announced. I'm just going to talk about my three favorites-those that rung my chimes and give you URL's to images and descriptions. I was impressed by many of the new offerings-a switchblade multitool from SOG, the CRKT Casper, the new Paragon-heck there were all kinds of super new knives at the show. Here are my three favorites all of which will find a home in my personal collection:

1. Schrade Lake and Walker. This is really a super knife. It features a BG-42 blade, Kevlar+Zytel handle that they've fashioned into a frame lock (the first synthetic framelock to my knowledge) that uses a steel disc to fit into a concavity on tang of the blade. It's limited to 1000 numbered pieces and has a list price of $200. I placed an order and we should have them in March or so. Yes, I ordered one for myself as well. You can see it at http://www.knifeoutlet.com/shrade2pix.htm along with the new d'Holder BG42 hunter which will be in my personal collection too.

2. Camillus Quest Talonite Hunter. I don't have measurements but I did handle the knife. This modestly sized hunter is high tech all the way. Designed by Rob Simonich, this fixed blade knife features a Talonite blade and sculptured G-10 scales. The factory people told me it will take them 1/2 hour to grind each blade. They are very impressed with the performance of the Talonite. Naturally I ordered some (one for me too) for March delivery. http://www.knifeoutlet.com/camillus2pix.htm will get you to an image and description.

3. Benchmade Balisong. I was impressed with this titanium handled rebirth of the original Benchmade butterfly. It features screw adjustable "drag" on the pivots and a little design element that prevents the blade from nicking itself on the latch like the original could do. A lot of butterfly fans have been waiting for this one and I'll put one in my collection too. You can find it at http://www.knifeoutlet.com/benchmade.htm along with the Ares and other new models from Benchmade.

I'm sure you'll read about most of the other exciting new products as people return from the show and get on the net. Looks 2000 will be a great year for things that cut. Take care.

I must be doing something wrong. I went over to your web site and I couldn't find a price for the Camillus Quest.

How much are these and what is the availability?

Don't feel bad, I couldn't find a price for the Schrade knife either. Maybe Fred will give us each one for free. Maybe not. Actually, I appreciate Fred posting the pictures.

I didn't put the new products into the pricing and ordering database yet. I'm not confident about the numbers. I know both Schrades have a $200 list, the Camillus/Simonich collaboration was in the area of $170 or $180 list (Will, correct me if I'm wrong) and I seem to remember the Benchmade Balisong at about the same price level as the Quest. These are all expensive production knives but I didn't feel any of them were overpriced.

You guys simply won't believe the fit, finish and quality Schrade has put into these great new limited edition knives. They're learning to work with BG42 and Camillus is learning to work with Talonite. It warms my heart to see old line cutlery companies like Schrade and Camillus putting out such high end, high tech products. I promise you will all be as impressed as I was.

Mike, sorry you missed the show. I realize you've been to many of them. This was my first and I about wore myself out gawking at everything. Take care.

Judging from the picture of the Camillus Quest, I can see where it came from. Sweet (drool)! Rob is da man. It might be my ticket to get my hands on a Simonich (albeit factory). That Schrade Lake-Walker is also nice, and so is the BM (thank you, thank you BM). Harummph..., so many knives, so little money. Thanks for providing us the pics Fred.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to wipe my keyboard dry :0.

Titanium Handled Butterfly knife for about $200? What steel in the blade?
How does it feel to work that knife? Adjustable tension on the pivots sounds weird?
How soon can one purchase one of these, that is if one wanted to get one of course, not saying I do as I'm really trying to be a good boy and not buy stuff.....at least for a while?

Thanks Fred, glad you made it back in one piece.

Gary:

The street price will be a lot closer to $100 than $200. I honestly forgot the list price but I think it was in the $160 or $170 range.

Blade steel is 12C27 and the knife operated in a manner I'd describe as smooth and loose. Understand I'm not a butterfly manipulator. I value my fingers too much. I'd be the wrong person to give you functional review of the knife.

Basically it's fair to say that it's well made with great fit and finish and appears to this butterfly non-expert as the sort of thing a butterfly expert could get into. I'll hunt down the prices next week and try to get these new products into the pricing and ordering database. Take care.
