What's up for grabs here is most of a really solid custom 2"x72" knife maker's style belt grinder.

When I was trying to find a way to move beyond my Craftsman 2"x42" belt grinder, but hadn't yet come to the realization that I really needed a KMG, I started to build my own grinder. This machine started life in a different type of grinding. It was a solid donor machine with a strong heart.

Here's what it turned into. The grinder body is a 6 1/4" wide x 2 1/2 " thick x 32" long piece of channel iron chassis that is between .200 and .400 on cross section. It's BEEFY! On the bottom end is a custom axle that I made of 4140 pre hardened steel carrying a Grizzly 8" contact wheel. The axel is running in sealed precision bearings and is set up for belt drive with a four step pulley. On the opposite end is a 3.5" solid steel idler wheel also riding in precision bearings with a high crown and an easily adjustable belt tracking mechanism. The belt is pre-loaded by an adjustable pressure coil spring that's connected to a quick release lever that would allow very fast belt changes.

As it is set up now, it has an 8" contact wheel I sourced from Grizzly (easy to replace) and a slack grinding area of the belt. With a small amount of work, it could easily have a flat platen added and a work rest.

All this grinder needs to come to full fruition is someone dedicated enough to make a nice mount for it and to hook up a decent motor.

I am giving this grinder away free of charge to a needy knifemaker for local pick up only. It is bulky and heavy and I don't want to ship it. While the grinder is worthy of a 1.5hp or 2hp variable speed drive setup if mounted correctly, I'll include a 3/4hp Craftsman 110V single phase motor with appropriate 4 step pulley set to get you started.

It's really not far from being fully functional. A motivated guy could probably get a base built for it in an afternoon and have it working at least for hollow grinding. I might even be able to be talked into helping build the base the day the new owner came to pick it up if they brought some 1/4 or thicker steel plate or some heavy angle iron for materials. I have the Bridgeport and a few other tools to make the job easier.

I wouldn't be parting with this machine, but I seem to have accidentally ended up with a pair of KMGs for my knifemaking needs and I'm out of space in the shop. I can't see this thing just laying on a shelf, but my motivation to finish the project myself, just so I can give away a completed grinder is sort of minimal. Somebody can make some nice knives with this thing. It's WAY beefier than a Grizzly, and I'd say probably beefier than a Coote as well. I'd really like to see this thing go to a needy maker, preferably to someone who is suffering with no grinder or a really cheesy one.

Anyone out there want a grinder?????

Pick up in Simi Valley, CA 93065.

I'd bought one from Rob right after Blade 2005. When I got it, I fell in love with it, but still planned to finish this grinder, or perhaps turn it into a horizontal. Then a young guy near me posted one used in as new condition at a heavily discounted price. It's REALLY rare to see a USED KMG, especially one that's being sold at a serious discount. I tried to find someone local to buy it, but couldn't on short notice, so I bought #2 with the intention of just holding it for a short time until someone nearby needed it. Once I got it home, it was just crying out for some paint. So I painted it. Then for kicks, I thought I'd try to show horn it into my shoebox shop just to see if it would fit, still intending to pass it on to someone else. Once I foud a way to fit it in, I bolted it to the bench, still intending to pass it along. Now tha tI've found that having two grinders is actually useful, even for a hobby maker, especially with interchangable attachments that fit my original one, I'm not parting with KMG#2!

But I am giving away a really nice project grinder that's almost complete:)

I may be your needy knifemaker. I went to Kricket's today and pounded steel for the first time. I'm currently using a 1x42 belt grinder. I have rebuilt several large pieces of equipment including a lathe, a shaper, and a sabre saw. If you are interested in giving this to someone who will use it, and can work on it I am your man. Lemme know. I will of course pay you for shipping, and I'll see what I can do for you beyond that. Thanks for consideration.

Andy,

I have posted this on another forum a few days ago and have several folks who'd like it, if only I'd ship it to them. Shipping this beast would be a giant pain in my arse, so I'm really hoping to find a local that wants it and can do local pick up. You sound like the right kind of guy for the machine, if only you weren't so far away.

Well if you decide to ship it I'll compensate you. Thanks for the offer anyway though.

Is there any chance you might consider just shipping the wheels and hardware without the big C-channel? I've already got some channel that I can just reassemble the pieces into and voila!

Did you design it as you went, or did you make it from a set of plans? I'm also using a Multi Tool, and am looking to upgrade to a better grinder. However, I'm dead-set on making my own tools (caught this bug after making my own forges!), and would like to get a good set of plans for a grinder. Can you make any reccommendations? By the way - you did a damn good job on this piece of gear!

Bennett, I was making it up as I went. Sorry, but there were no master plans.

This grinder is now awaiting local pick up and on it's way to a new home.

Thanks for your interest.

There are links to several sets of plans for making homemade grinders on the links page here: http://groups.msn.com/HomeorshopmadeGrinders
Lot of photos and information as well.

I see some really innovative designs there, J.

Nice work. :)

It's a start on a great grinder for some lucky person.

Any feedback on the Craftsman 2" x 42" grinder that you started with as a starter machine for a hobbyist maker?

Yeah, buy a KMG. :)

I had the older 3 wheel design Craftsman. It was a much better machine than the later 2 wheel design. With a bit of work it could be made a lot more useable by a determined guy, but out of the box, it was very frustrating to me. Belts are available from Tru Grit, but the selection is limited. The belt speed is too fast for me. The platen is small and flimsy, but would be easy enough to make more rigid, but not much larger.

2x72 really is the way to go, even if you have to go as basic as a Grizzly, although most who do and get serious end up buying a more expensive grinder later it seems.

Just my $.02 .
