I am really enjoying the whole process in the building of a lock-back, after coming home I had to put some things on hold. I spent a few days working on a completely new design and decided to go with green canvas micarta to hold it all together. There is no blade play what so ever, the one draw back at the moment is I think it needs a pivot if I plan to do more of these, the pinning more than likely is damaging the blade to handle pivot area a little bit. It is smooth but it seems to be just a tad tight, the blade does not close on its own even though it worked before it was all hammered together. Before anyone gets to crazy I know it has some issue it is my second one, but by all means fire away:D

The bonus it weighs a Whopping 1.7 oz thats the same weight as a bic lighter so I decided to call it the "Free Fall" folder

I will continue to explore more possibilities with the lock back, and push my limits.

A 3" cpm 154 HRc 59 hollow ground blade
cpm 154 Back spacer and lock bar
Pivot is .125 ss rod as are the rest of the pins
Handle is GCM

Great looking one, Spencer. Really like the blade shape.

spencer...i really like the look of the cutouts on the micarta....and i like light-weight folders....looks good...especially for a 2nd attempt....ryan

Looking at that knife, it is amazing to me that it is only your second folder. It looks like you've been making them for years.

Are you making sheaths for these folders?

Hey thanks a lot, keith at this point no on the sheaths that was one of the reasons I choose the canvas micarta and a smaller size it will get lost in you pocket like a bic lighter or a pack of gum. I plan on using bushing in the next ones to get rid of any pinch which I new i would get from this conventional method. Keith further more I really think I may have found what I like about knife making in the lock-back design we will see what come down the pipe?

Lets see small one-check, mid size-check ummm only one direction to go:D

Man, look at those cruddy looking knifemaker's fingers! :p:D

The knife looks good, Spence.

Where do you guys learn to make things like that?
I'm new to this whole knife life, and I'm looking all over the internet for good instructions on how to make knifes (especially folders even though everyone says to start out with fixed).
Where did all of you learn this craft from?

Yup. Really a good direction.

Feedback:
I love the blade shape.
I love the handle shape.
I am not crazy about the green canvas, but that's me and easily changed.

May I mention something in honesty? I really don't like these random milled pockets. Milling is OK. Just make a pattern that makes more sense. ( I would have liked that simple long mill going from front to rear, giving the scale an I-beam effect.)

Second lockback? Lookout.

Count me in when you start taking orders and have it down. Really.

I personally built fixed blades for about a 1 1/2 before trying any folder action, for the lock-backs i was able to visit a old school maker that helped me out, I paid him a daily fee of course it was worth every penny. Look around and you will be surprised how many makers are in say 300 miles of you, most makers are very giving of there time and knowledge. Get Wanye Goddards book "50 dollar knife shop", it will get you a long ways on pennys look at amazon.com for it.....good luck

Coop I understand what you are saying, sometimes i go to the mill with no plan, but each mill slot has a indexing handling function if that makes sense.

Thanks for the encouragement, I will be sure to get some pink G-10 for you:D

Looks great, Spencer. I can see these becoming a big seller once you work out all the construction kinks.

I got the stuff on order to fix the pinch problem ( bushings ) I have not decided at this point if I will add a lanyard hole, belt clip or provide a leather belt sheath?

It did not stop this one from selling quickly, I pulled it out to show my orthpedic doctor who has a thing for green canvas micarta and he promptly handed me money back:D.

Thanks Jose

They all sound like good options. I prefer clips but a nice leather sheath adds some visual appeal. Looking forward to seeing the next one.

The Dr. paying you, wtg! :D

Spencer, I really like this one. The design is clean and sleek, and the knife looks like it will be really comfortable in the hand. I can't wait to see more of these!
