I was looking at the steelhearts... I was wondering with such a thick blade.. how is the cutting power effected? Given the skills nesessary could i sever ... say free hanging a one inch section manila rope with my soon to be mine steelheart? right now I use my coldsteel bolo machete for most of my woodsman streess relieving choping.. but the edge just does not stand up to the worK i put it threw... but it does get really sharp..

Or could someone point me in a different direaction of busse' ... some that are around 7 inces long .. good slicers and awsome choppers..(I know it's a short chopper but i can make it work that is what busse is all about)

Thankyou

If you are looking for a thinner blade but still staying with the steel heart size, find yourself a Zero Tolerance Steel Heart. Do a little search for more info and pics of this model. You might want to to to the exchange and make a post in the wanted to buy section also.

I dont mind the thickness. just as long as it cuts well. I dont' do a lot of prying so i doubt i will break it. Though I do like the heft of the thick blades.

Do any of you Hogs still have a link to the videos on the old Busse Website? The one in particular I'm referring to is the rope demo.

I can't speak to hanging rope, but I know I have brought down 1 inch branches with one swipe from a Basic 9. Bit more blade length never hurts. :D I understand that there is more "give" involved in hanging rope or vines versus rather ridgid branches.

I may be miss quoting, but I believe the saying is "Whatever broke your Busse, killed you five minutes earlier". ;)

As for chopping, the size and weight should serve your needs very well.

On the old Busse website, there was a video clip of someone (was it Jerry? you could only see the arm and knife) chopping through several (ten, I think it was, but I might be misremembering) 1 inch manila ropes in 1 swipe. A Steel Heart is certainly up to the task of severing a 1 inch free hanging rope.

Rope cutting is more a matter of how the knife was sharpened (edge geometry/ sharpness) and skill of the user. While the busse's may seem thick, they're flat ground all the way to the spine on most models, and the steel behind the edge is thin enough to cut well, but still be very resistant to damage. They are 1/4 inch thick knives though, you aren't going to get the same soft vegetation performance as you would out of a thin long machete. I can however slice strawberries paper thin using the factory edge on my Natural Outlaw-E

I'm just trying to decide what busse to get. I understand they dont cut like razors but are a bit stronger becasue of it. are the steelhearts just a bit smaller than the battle mistress?

One more question.. as for the zero tolerance knives with the additional thiness going to effect the strength ... or should I just assume it's as strong as i need it?

when is the last time you HAD to cut free hanging rope?
not a put-down, just doesnt seem like a good way to guage usefulness.
:)

I just want to know.. and should have asked in the first place.. how sharp they come... I know they have a durrable edge... doest that mean they are as sharp as the corner of my desk.?

In my experience, they vary in sharpness (straight from Wauseon). I've received a couple that were only kind-of sharp, and a few that were extraordinarily sharp.

In any case, all Busse knives I've seen can take and hold superb edges.
